I remember years ago when I was a "devout" JW there was a co-worker of mine that spent every waking minute trying to convert JW's to born-again christianity. I was abit afraid of him because I thought he was demon-possessed. He had all of the old WT publications and spent many hours debating with JW elders. He even pickited with a group of christians at some of the JW assemblies. This was in the year 1983 and I recently ran into another co-worker that worked with both of us at that job and I was told that my "apostate" former co-worker is now a devout JW and pioneering. I just cannot believe this but my former co-worker would have no reason to lie because she used to hate JW's and born-agains. She gave me his phone number and I am afraid to call him now after 20 years. The situations are now in reverse now I am the apostate trying to convince JW's of the errors of the WT and he is a JW. I just don't know what I could say to him that he has not already heard or said to me in 1983. We would debate hours on end after work in the park across the street from our job. I would get home late sometimes and barely had time to clean up and run to the theocratic ministry school. Sometimes we would meet on weekends when we were off from work and we would just go in a circle with the bible. We mainly talked about the trinity doctrine and the deity of Jesus and he would always tell me that I was going to hell for rejecting the trinity and I would tell him he would be destroyed for believing in it. Do any of you posters out there know of any "apostates" or "evil slaves" that went back to JW's or became JW's?

He may be too far gone but if he has access to a NWT Bible 1961 edition get him to compare it to the current edition at Hebrews :1-6. If the bible doesn't open his eyes nothing will.

I would thank him for all his hard work and patience with you when you knew each other in years past. You now see the light. That will start him thinking. Enough said.

There was a witness woman in Texarkana named Mattie that professed to be of the anointed. She was disfellowshipped for apostasy, but the decision was overturned on appeal. A few months later she was again before the committee for apostasy and disfellowshipped. She was disfellowshipped the whole time I lived ther (4 years). She seldomly missed a meeting, always turned in time and insisted that she was wrongly disfellowshipped. She was scorned by the congrgation. I even heard one pioneer sister say she had committed the unforgivable sin. I told the sis she'd feel funny if Mattie ever got reinstated. She said it'd never happen cause Mattie had grieved the holy spirit. Well... Matie moved to a different cong and was quickly reinstated. I never spoke to her and she died shortly after being reinstated. It a very sad situatuion.

I don't know of any that went back.
About your friend, i would not try to change him. I might ask some questions like why he went back, and how it went. But, i'm sure he has his reasons, so i would leave it at that. Or, it could be that he is mentally unstable. If that is the case, there little point in argueing. But, that's me. Do whatever you want. Maybe you like the long debates. So go for it.

The bad news: I was dfd for apostasy (some 20 years ago), and went back.
The good news: I was dfd again for apostasy (some 4 years ago), and ain't goin' back.
imho, and as so many others on this db have stated--the reasons for going back have a whole lot more to do with underlying psychological pressures, and seemingly inescapable family issues, than with conviction about WTS doctrine, or even about God and the Bible.
It sure was that way for me; I fought both dfings tooth-and-nail.

Get him to read "Who Wrote the Bible" by Friedman. Get him to understand why all of that fundamentalism at least is bullshit.
