Poor Jeffery! How the mighty have fallen.

I don't figure the connection, but England have lost the toss 12 out of 13 times. What's with that????????

Jeffery Archer returned to his home town a while ago, to celebrate the end of a mayoral term for a drinking pal of mine.

Although I am not of the same political persuasion, I attended Lord Archers superb speech in which he commiserated with the departing Mayor. This is what he said about Mayor Bryant:

"So Peter, that's it then. Tomorrow you will be just another ordinary man. Reduced to the ranks. A mere mortal. Stripped of all power. I, of course, will still be a Lord!"

    Hilarious.

Yes, Archer is a funny, witty and very bright guy. But he also zealously supported the most heinous crimes of the Thatcher regime (support and comfort for South Africa's apartheid regime and the fascist Pinochet dictatorship in Chile, bloody U.S. supported right-wing terrorist attacks on democratic movements all over the 3rd world, the Falklands war etc…). Although he will probably be held in a minimum security country club, I hope is he is jailed in a maximum security jail where hard-core inmates can have a little fun with him.

There are bits and pieces in the thread, but what's Archer's claim to fame? Tell us about him.

    Alan,

He was part of Thatchers court, possibly a minister once. He's an undying righty of course. Also, a notable writer of less than wonderful fiction, but it sells well. Unfortunately his fiction didn't impress the judge at the old bailey, he's been sent down for 4 counts of perjury.

How perjury? Years back, he was exposed in the press for sleeping with a prostitute, he denied it, sued the paper...and WON. But to win he had to perjure himnself and manufacture evidence. Just like writing a book really. So he got found out, poor bugger.

OK! Jeffery Archer is a local WSM boy. In 1969 he became the youngest MP to take a seat in the House of Commons. Some bad business dealings made him virtually bankrupt in 1975, he then lost his Member of Parliament status.

He promptly set about writing his first novel entitled "Not a penny more, not a penny less", and recouped his losses. He wrote lots of books that were televised, amongst them was "Kane and Abel". Other books included:

    The Prodigal Daughter
    Shall We Tell the President?
    A Matter of Honor
    First Among Equals
    A Quiver Full of Arrows
    Twelve Red Herrings
    As the Crow Flies
    A Twist in the Tale
    The First Miracle
    The Fourth Estate

With his finances restored he became a pet of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and advanced to becoming the chairman of the Conservative Party. Always an ebullient fella, he was severely miffed to find that he was targeted as a user of prostitutes by the Daily Star newspaper.

In typical style, he sued and won damages from them in the mid 80's. He was later made a Peer for services rendered and adopted the title "Lord Archer of Weston super Mare and Mark".

A couple of tears ago, a guy who had provided him with false alibis re the prostitute saga admitted that he had lied in his sworn evidence and as a consequence, Archer was ejected from the Tory party.

The Daily Star pressed for prosecution, claiming that Archer had perjured himself in court, an accusation that was substantiated today.

So there you have it,the only "Lord" that I can remember being put in prison and he comes from my town. The locals want him stripped of the title as they reckon that it reflects badly upon the town. I reckon a bit of notoriety will do us good!
