My partner and I are looking into the Dallas area to relocate once our house sells here in Dayton. The climate seems to be reasonable, the job market seems to be good, and the area appears nice and friendly. Valis has graciously given me pointers on which areas are good, and has given me a heads up on Dallas.

If any of Y'all can give me pointers on some good companies for jobs, and different areas of Dallas that are geared towards being Artsy-Fartsy and a good area to either find a house or apartment, it would be much appreciated. I have heard that Uptown, Oak Lawn and Deep Ellum can be good. Are there any other areas that are safe, yet reasonable as far as rent, and cost of living? What areas should be avoided?

I will be continuing in my Antiques business, and maybe one day open a shop there. Right now, I do shows, have spaces set up in malls, and do a lot of internet sales. I would need to be near an area with access to lots of Antiques. I deal mainly with 18th century furniture and accessories, and primitives. It seems that the primitives market would be really good in that area.

    Any feedback would be appreciated!

    Thanks!!!

    CJ

South Dallas, West Dallas, Pleasant Grove, Mesquite, Garland, Several parts of Oak Cliff are some places you might not want to drive into without knowing where you are going or have someone with you.

Hey man lemme know if I can be of more help and I'll start working on your immigration documents today...

Woo-hoo!!! Fantastic! Better bring Chelsea with you. The McKinney Avenue area is VERY up and coming for antiques -- lots of old houses that are being renovated into antique stores and it's close to The Crescent which is a sister property to The Mansion -- very upscale clientele. Lakewood area, which is a little bit northeast of McKinney Avenue, also has some good places.

Don't worry, we'll hook you up! Valis is more plugged in than we are, but we can add our two cents' worth from a suburban point of view! Chris and I live near Plano, which is white-bread-pretension squared (we're just slumming) but the soccer moms love to go shopping, so you might poke around up there too.

    Cheers,

    Nina

Some parts of Oak Cliff, too, are becoming VERY trendy and have not yet become expensive. You need to just come on down for a visit and look around with the help of us locals.

Nina forgot to mention that there is an additional gated community insider her community...*LOL*

Don't remind me. I keep thinking of ways to sabotage that area but the only thing that works is chucking crawfish over the fence and into their pools.

    Great news CJ!

Stay away from Plano/Richardson. They're typical suburbs (white bread no imagination and very boring). Nina's right about Oak Cliff, but you've got to be careful about where to buy. Lakewood is excellent but a bit pricey. The M streets part of Dallas is also good. Rule of thumb in Dallas is buy north of downtown.

You probably would find good clientele in Highland Park. Don't know the retail situation there, but that's where the big money is in Dallas (that and west Plano).

Anything we can do to help, just holler!

Thanks for the info! It will be good to know what areas to look in when going there to look. I can't believe that there are so many antiques shops down there. I have to drive miles and miles up here to get to any good ones.

My partner wants to get a job doing customer service type work. Right now he is in Charge of an area in the company he is in. Looking on the internet, there are some big companies up there; Texas instruments, etc. Seems like a good area to be in.

If buying in North Dallas would be good, how far North?

I have even thought of doing Interior Design again. I did design for about 7 years in Ft. Lauderdale, so I have skills doing that. I guess it would depend on the area.

ohio...this may also be something you may want to consider. Last weekend we went to a texas tradition that is Canton, First Monday. Huge flea market, with all kinds of stuff including the mecca for collecting antiques and so forth. I would also imagine one could make a lot of money selling antiques there.
