I'm a big George Carlin fan. Naturally, I had to check out his website, now that I'm back online.

For any fans of George, I was both saddened and heartened to read the following,

    STATEMENT FROM GEORGE CARLIN

I'm going into rehab because I use too much wine and Vicodin. No one
told me I needed this; I recognized the problem and took the step
    myself.

    My levels of use are nowhere near the worst you hear about these days;
I could easily have continued functioning at a good level for awhile.
But my use would have progressed, I would have been in deeper trouble,
and I didn't want to tolerate that.

I've never been in rehab before and I know it isn't easy, but I'm
highly motivated, and will do whatever's needed.

When I get out, I will take a little time for myself before resuming my
    schedule.

    Thanks. See ya soon.

    George

He's supposed to be back on tour in March, let's hope he's taking that time out now.

You can still read some of his really funny rants and listen to an MP3 of "The 10 Commandments" at his website. It's belly-laugh material, for those who enjoy his satire.

CAUTION: Language, total irreverance. If your sensibilities are delicate, you may be offended.

George Carlin is the kind of person that is needed in exposing truth, about virtually anything. I wish there was someone who could better vocalize his degree of wit and humor, to bring about the honesty that is needed regarding the Truth about the Truth!!!

    DAMN! Wine and Vicodin!!!

My sis-in-law is having a bit of a problem with Vicodin. If it can drive Carlin to a self-imposed rehab, it MUST be real motherforya, all I got to say...

Yes, I agree. I've admired him since I was a teen.

Well, he left a message on his website for his fans. I haven't seen a big splash about it in the press, which is not to say it wasn't publicized. He identified his problem, chose to go in rehab, makes no excuses. I think it's very positive.

It may mean he will survive for another 30 years to rail against the system. Go George!

Do you see what I mean? That's why I felt mixed emotions when I read it.

btw, congratulations, I read that you are happier and less angry ;) me, too

Funny I never saw this on any of the "entertainment" news shows, but as he is checking himself in, it's probably not "spicy" enough to report on.

    Gutsy move on his part.

    Get well George.

Newly sober Carlin revisits Majestic tonight

There are some things in this world that aren't that surprising.

    George Carlin
Where: Majestic Theater, 224 E. Houston St.
    When: 8 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $35-$40 at Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets for the Jan. 14 date will be honored.
Comedy iconoclast George Carlin selling out the Majestic Theater is one (It's the same story tonight when he performs at 8).

That he knows a thing or two about mood-altering drugs is another.

But it was a bit of a shock to learn in December that Carlin had checked himself into rehab at an undisclosed location to dry out from a growing habit of wine and pills. And it was disappointing to learn he had postponed his San Antonio concert (originally scheduled Jan. 14).

"I'm going into rehab because I use too much wine and Vicodin," Carlin said in a prepared statement through his publicist.

"No one told me I needed this. I recognized the problem and I took the step myself." Carlin added that he was "motivated" to kick it and that his problem wasn't as bad as those of other celebrities.

The outrageous, groundbreaking comedian, actor and best-selling author seems to be as hard on himself as he is on the pious targets he skewers.

But at his core, the angry, foul-mouthed comedian, provocateur of the seven dirty words, is an unapologetic perfectionist, and there is no doubt that his meticulously worked-out, linear bits will be edgy as ever, razor sharp and, yes, sick tonight.

"I don't stop when I have a traffic accident," Carlin told a packed house at the Majestic back in 2002. "Who has the time?"

As always, Carlin's show comes with the tacit warning: No audience participation allowed. To heckle or "help" Carlin when he's on a roll onstage is to risk the wrath of a genius comedy diva who is neither hippy nor dippy.

"Calm down, it's not a (expletive) rodeo," a disgusted Carlin warned two rude audience members at that Majestic show in 2002. Carlin then ordered security officers to escort them out when they didn't stop "the cowboy (expletive)."

Carlin isn't out to be anyone's pal when he's performing.

"I'm not their drinking buddy," he told the San Antonio Express-News in a 2002 interview. He doesn't like to be annoyed, distracted or have his flow interrupted.

"My stuff is linear. It kind of goes from thought to thought. And it has some progression to it," Carlin said in 2002.

In retrospect, it's possible that Carlin's wine and Vicodin cocktails were affecting his mood onstage, too. On the eve of his rehab announcement, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on a Carlin onstage meltdown on his last night at the MGM Grand in December that was ugly, even by Carlin standards.

During a rant about moronic Las Vegas tourists, the Las Vegas newspaper reported, a female audience member confronted Carlin, who promptly ordered her to perform a sexual act on him.

That the legendary, unrepentant Grammy- and Emmy-winning comic has made a career out of such behavior is certainly no secret ? and is part of his winning formula. Evidence: His latest book, "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?" (Hyperion), is another best seller.

Yay for George! He's my all time favorite comedian. I saw him in Madison back in the early 80's-great show. I was surprised at his height. I was expecting him to be very tall and he's not. I'm glad he got the help he needed.

    ((((((tal)))))))))

It was really a good show. Leon Redbone opened for him and he was awesome too. I was sitting fairly close to the stage and Leon was up there sitting on a chair playing guitar and singing. This HUGE voice was coming out of him but you could not see his lips moving at all! The only thing that really moved on him was a very little tapping movement of his toe.

you know what they say- you only go around this track one time- have fun!!
