How does Google work so fast? Any techies with an inside track?

    I believe that Google started as a research project at MIT in which something like 10,000 old computers were connected as a massively parallel processing network. Each machine knows about a fraction of the Internet. The query is simultaneously delivered to all the systems, which then report on their results.

    But I'm too lazy right now to try to find a reference on that. :-)
