Posted March 18 2005, 6:28 PM ESTHOMOSASSA -- A registered sex offender with an extensive criminal history confessed Friday to killing 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, who disappeared from her bedroom more than three weeks ago, officials said.
John Evander Couey admitted abducting and killing Jessica, who was last seen when she was tucked into bed the night of Feb. 23, Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said. ``I've got my man,'' an emotional Dawsy said Friday.
Deputies Friday used yellow tape to block off an area near the home of Couey's half-sister, about 150 yards from where Jessica lived with her father and grandparents. Couey also has a home in Homosassa, but sometimes stayed with his half-sister, authorities said.
Authorities previously searched his half-sister's home and removed some items that were sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for further investigation, Dawsy said.
Couey, 46, was arrested Thursday in Augusta, Ga., on a probation violation for failing to notify officials that he was leaving Florida, a requirement for sex offenders.
He had been named as a ``person of interest'' in the case but not initially charged in Jessica's disappearance. He waived extradition Friday to clear the way for him to be moved to Florida before he confessed to the crimes after a polygraph test in Augusta, Dawsy said.
Jessica, a third grader, was last seen wearing a pink nightgown when she went to bed Feb. 23 in the home where she lived with her father and grandparents. She was discovered missing the next morning, with an unlocked door and a missing stuffed animal serving as evidence of her disappearance.
Couey left Florida on or about March 4, about a week after her disappearance, after telling relatives that police would be looking for him, officials said.
Jessica's father, Mark Lunsford, said he has never seen Couey. A sheriff's spokeswoman who answered the phone at the Lunsford home said the family declined immediate comment.
Couey was arrested Thursday morning, after the Augusta Salvation Army contacted police when a background check showed a pending warrant for someone who had stayed at the shelter overnight.
Couey's criminal record includes arrests for burglary, carrying a concealed weapon and indecent exposure. In 1991, he was arrested in Kissimmee on a charge of fondling a child under age 16. Records don't show how the case was resolved.
During a house burglary in 1978, he was accused of grabbing a girl in her bedroom, placing his hand over her mouth and kissing her, Citrus County sheriff Jeff Dawsy said. Couey was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was paroled in 1980, a time when inmates were serving a small fraction of their sentences.

Dumb law, a guy just got jailed in England for killing 2 other guys and eating their brains! They let him out of a psychiatric hospital! Same thing happened last year, they let someone out and they killed again!

Why is some one like that even allowed to walk the streets? Many doctors argue that sexual predators and p edophiles cannot be rehabilatated. How many of them kill again?
