Why can't Jehovah Witnesses go to the school prom? I have always wondered this.

Because they want their members to be socially isolated. "There might be drugs. There might be sex. There might be... WORLDY ASSOCIATION!!!!!!!! Would a Christian go to a prom?" And so on.

The way it was explained to me was that it was a "worldly" ritual that included pre-marrital sex and drinking.

Of course anything outside of just learning was not aloud.

LOL....yeah, that takes me back to my teenage years. Basically, like the_classicist said, JWs are encouraged ordered by the WTS to have minimal contact with anyone who is not a JW because they might be a bad influence on them since they don't serve the same god. That rules out pretty much all social activities like dances, playing on school sport teams, being part of a club at school etc...

So they shouldn't go because of the worldy things?? JW can't play on school sports teams?? Why is that? I dont understand that one.

I was never allowed to go because a) there are boys there!!! b) you might actually dance with a boy....and that would be wrong...touching a boy before marriage.

Although in australia we dont have proms they were called formals and they wernt as big and special as a prom

Rtjmoss... I don't know how much you know about the Witnesses. Quick primer: they believe that they are the only 'true' religion, and that all others (even other Christians) are 'worldly' and thus 'bad association'. So they frown on anything that would involve unnecessary socialization with non-Witnesses, including most extracurricular activities.

The degree of strictness varies from family to family and congregation to congregation, but that's the overall position.

Dating is not considered casual recreation but a means to determine if the person would make a good marriage partner. Dating non-JWs is strongly discouraged.

    Sports

    Competitive

    Physically dangerous

    Bad association

Takes up time that could be spent in attending meetings and preaching

BTW, that was a second question.
