From my personal persepctive, it's definitely no#1 in terms of many new technologies/industries. 9 out of 10 job offers in language engineering I get to see are from the US. Europe is lagging behind miserably. But that's just my personal frustration.

Double Edge
. Like the WT Society, Bush has divided our country into the so-called Red and Blue States. In a matter of days, he squandered the good will expressed by most of the world following 9-11. It?s little wonder we?ve seen USA bashing on the increase. Hopefully we?ll wise up and do better the next time we go the polls.
That will only happen if the Democrats "wise up" and will give the people a REAL candidate to vote for.

Actually, with some of the things that have been happening here in the US over the course of the last year or so, I would have to say it is becoming a big steaming load of No. 2....

Ok, at the risk of being incinerated, I voted for G.W. Bush. Now, before you all put your phasers from stun to kill, I'll tell you what many of my friends and I agree on. I was ready to vote him out of office on several points. I didn't because there were too many flip-flops performed by his opponent.
Show me a good candidate, and I'll vote for him/her. In this last election, I voted for the known quantity rather than chance someone who seemed to lack direction. To tell you the truth, I may very well have voted for Howard Dean, but Kerry just changed tracks too much.
If I could say one thing to the Democratic Party, puhleeezzzz find someone who can connect with the people better and has a firm opinion that does not change around so much and you will win the next one. It's your turn!!

- The United States is 49th in the world in literacy (the New York Times, Dec. 12, 2004).
- The United States ranked 28th out of 40 countries in mathematical literacy (NYT, Dec. 12, 2004).
- Twenty percent of Americans think the sun orbits the earth. Seventeen percent believe the earth revolves around the sun once a day (The Week, Jan. 7, 2005).
- "The International Adult Literacy Survey...found that Americans with less than nine years of education 'score worse than virtually all of the other countries'" (Jeremy Rifkin's superbly documented book The European Dream: How Europe's Vision of the Future Is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream, p.78).
- Our workers are so ignorant and lack so many basic skills that American businesses spend $30 billion a year on remedial training (NYT, Dec. 12, 2004). No wonder they relocate elsewhere!
I'd say that 15 percent or more of the folks who work where I do can't read or write English. And that would be because they are immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries. How many percent of people in the world in general think the sun orbits the earth? I bet a lot more than 20 percent. Have you ever seen the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy?
