Most of my friends are female. It's just much easier for me to be friends with women. It may have something to do with me having four sisters and no brothers. :)
Having female friends didn't seem to bother my wife as long as the relationship was appropriate and didn't cross any lines. ie, it shouldn't be romantic in any way, and there shouldn't really be anything you keep from your mate and tell your friends. Your mate should know everything about you, IMO. -
