My mom lived in New Jersey (Teaneck, Englewood, Passaic) as a girl, and worked in New York City, so I've heard enough stories to understand most of that! She said there was a saying that if you were lost or took a long time, you "went via Canarsie." Evidently that was the last stop on the subway, somewhere in New Jersey. I've used that expression all of my life but had to explain it to most people until I ran into a lawyer from New York.
I think he's still laughing! He never thought he'd hear that phrase in Texas.

I enjoyed this thread!
Born and raised in Bergen County, NJ.
Nina - I went to the KH in Englewood for many years. My dad was an elder there. We must know some of the same people from there...
-Aude.
I was born and raised in Oregon so most of these went over my head
But my husband was born and bred there... he got quite a chuckle out of it.
I grew up in the NY/PA/NJ Tri-State area (Orange County) and picked up on most of those. The Action Park one is especially poignant since I had a couple of friends who got severe "road rash" from going down the Alpine Slide without a shirt...
Lol...so true!

A New Jersey tale ....
