    Dear Talesin,

Let's go on a little trip. A stroll down Talesin Lane. A journey which requires no movement. An adventure into you.

Sit back, and for a while give attention only to what is being felt. For a moment, you, are the entire universe.

What is depression? What does it feel like? Is there physical feelings? Perhaps tightness in your tummy? A sense of pressure closing in? A feeling that you are contracting into a tight little ball? Is there a sense of being crushed? Is breathing dificult? What? Where are the muscles tight? Do a silent inner physical examination that you may see what depression feels like in the body. Get to know depression.

Don't make any judgments. Just look. Be very present with what you have labeled "depression".

Now, are there any mental thoughts or pictures that accompany or are connected to the physical sensations? Memories perhaps? A sense of fear? Impending doom? Don't judge. Just silently and gently look.

Really get to know depression and it's multifaceted nature. Now look at what is looking. Is IT, at all touched by what it is seeing? Are you depressed? Or is depression (physical and mental expressions) just kind of moving through you?

Depression, can be a wonderful door way to deeper understanding and help you see what is not so real, and what is.

Geez JamesThomas, I wish I had your sense of inner peace. I've just come to rely on Prozac j/k. I've got to do the j/k thing now because some people do not understand my warped sense of humour.

    xjw,

Having been institutionalized more than once and on max doses of MAOI's (strong and dangerous antidepressants) for thirteen years, the agony of chronic and intense suicidal depression is known here. Fighting depression as if it were a curse and a demon, only seemed to prolong and aggravate matters. Only when I put up my sword and opened to depression as a teacher and guide rather than an enemy, was there any significant sense of peace and understanding. So, I can only hope that such lessons can help others as well.

Pain, be it physical or psychological, is often natures way of informing us that we are off track from our natural being. Depression, can be a blessing if seen as an inherent movement towards inner peace, our real Home and Center.

That sounds really good, actually. I 'get' it. Embracing the feeling instead of railing against it --- hmmm, I never thought of it that way (natch!). I will do some serious thinking on this ... thanks.
