It was on the Vancouver news this morning. They told what was going on and then the stupid dub lawyer was interviewed. He said that this is about the right to decide what to do with you body. He said it could very well be a moral issue or something other than religious. That she has a right to decide. She is trying to change her status as an 'adult'. I wonder if we can find out when exactly this is happening and where and to whom we can email or go give our support. Sickening.

Here is global tv's email so that they can get as much input into this as possible. WHY did they just interview the stupid lawyer and not others opposed????

Is anyone reading this thread anymore?

The news also said the classic line "She would view it as being sexually assulted or robbed if blood was forced on her" That Shawn Brady looks like a right little weasel. I would like to slap his smug little freaky face.

    Jez --

Leaving aside, for the moment, the question of whether or not this particular 14-yo girl is mature enough to be considered an adult capable of making such a life-and-death decision, what troubles me is the question of what constitutes truly informed consent.

If someone must make a decision which has potentially life-threatening consequences, than the decision out to be a fully informed decision, imo.

As I read it, the editorial in the Journal of Medical Ethics, which I quoted from earlier, makes a case that doctors would be acting ethically if they informed their JW patients that there are dissident JW's who do accept blood.

It seems to me that a truly informed decision cannot be made unless the JW patient has been told of the information on the AJWRB site; in particular, of the instances where Hemopure has been approved, and, especially, of the WT's history of doctrinal changes regarding medical issues.

If a JW patient has not been told that the WT has changed its policy on things such as vaccinations and organ transplants, then the patient is making a decision based on partial information.

    Just my thoughts,

    Marjorie

I only saw the last few minutes of that and missed the lawyer. I'm probably glad as it would have made me angry.

I wonder if those statements would still stand if she decided to become sexually active and go on birth control. I bet you that she wouldn't have the right to decide what to do with her body then.

(edit: 14 is the age of consent in this province with some age-restrictions on the partner...)

That is a classic sentence JW are programmed to use in order to shock the judges into compliance with their (WTS) demands. I wonder if that is really what little girl feels.

On the other hand she never even had time to develop her own personality do decide what is right or wrong.

    Very good point CeriseRose

    ValiantBoy also summarized it well:

They say she is old enough to make that decision herslf. But suppose her decision was to take blood? Suddenly she would no longer be old enough.

    Makes you wonder doesn't it?

I cannot take credit, my fiancé caught that one right off on reading this thread with me. He's disgusted by this bs.

So true Alleymom. There is on doubt hordes of JW elders, blood committee members all around her, making sure that she makes the "right" decision.

I know her first name, moderator: can I post it? Apparently the JWs in Vernon are raising $ for the family to find alternative medical help.

I think of myself at 14 and there is no way I would have wanted the responsibilty to make a life or death decision. I would not have known what I know now, I would not have had the foresight and wisdom that age brings to make that kind of decision. Life is so precious and young ppl are well known for taking it for granted, or thinking they are invincible. If an adult, with more LIFE experience, decides to lessen their chance for survival, so be it. But this girl cannot possibly know the magnitude of what she is risking, her age alone prevents it.

I know that when I was her age I would have been making the decision she is. My parents would have backed that up. Today I wouldn't dream of it because of what I know. I can't read this stuff anymore it makes me so sick.
