For anyone who is a Catholic stop reading now - I'm about to mini vent.
I don't doubt that the recently departed Pope had many redeeming qualities and this post has nowt to do with him as a person.
I cannot get away from the fact that the pomp and ceremony of the Catholic church (including the regalia) is so far away from the humble woodcarvers son and his example. I bet the elaborate , manmade, ceremony has sent more people to the JW religion than all the watchtowers and awakes. I watched a few minutes of the popes funeral and I had to turn over becasue I felt nauseated. I thought back to the funeral of my Grandpa (no religious persuasion) where it was simple, humble and dignified and while I of course had an emotional investment in Gramps I just know that what is happening in Rome is some sort of parade of death rather than a farewell. Shame I never got to the know the man behind the hat - I could have felt sad to say goodbye to him. I find no scriptural evidence for papal props and pageantry. bleuh.
Sorry - I try not to be too negative - especially about other faiths but this one sticks in my throat.
Papal ceremony fairly ludicrous for Christians?

And did you see what Condoleeza Rice had on? You would think that she had known the Pope her entire life or something. I was halfway expecting her throw herself all over the Pope screaming, "Lord don't go!!! Oh Jesus! Jesus No! Don't go!" Then she would pass out and Laura Bush would have to fan her off.

I didn't watch the funeral. So I have no comments to add about that.
I just know that what is happening in Rome is some sort of parade of death rather than a farewell.
I don't know if I could say that. Sorrow is expressed so many ways. I don't know if there's a precisely "right" formula. I don't care for intricate ceremony, but ceremony alone is not a reason to be critical. The funeral is meant for Catholics, and Catholics have deep feelings about ceremony, generally.
It's also a culture gap, not just a religious gap.

Edited to add: Because I don't care for ceremony, I am sure my impressions would be somewhat negative in places, too. Like you said, Qcmbr, it can tend to turn a lot of people off. I agree with you, in great part, but I temper it with recalling that cultures with much symbolism appreciate this more than me.
Now that I've made my point as clear as mud... I'll go...

If you are catholic which BTW I was , the pope is the most powerful holy man in the entire universe . What got me was the chanting for him to be canonized as a saint when in fact it's the popes job to canonize the clergy . The pope assumes the position of the apostle peter and claims to have the keys to the kingdom as promised to peter so that would put him above the title of saint anyway .
I just want to know why ST. Peter square is really a circle . LOL

Nope. Qcmbr is LDS. He likes to come on here and talk trash about everybody else and then say how great his religion is.

Yeah, I'm glad this is almost done with, I'm pretty sick of it. Between him and Michael Jackson, I only get about 5 minutes of "other" news in a half hour broadcast!
And, I always thought the pope was kinda like the next thing to Jesus, right? Then how can he resign but remain Catholic? Isn't that like a member of the "anointed" deciding they don't want to go to heaven, but still want to be a witness?
Happyout - confused by it all

and I love the bishops hat exactly like Dagon the fish god- of course the RC church would say it was because some of Jesus disciples were fishermen
