JWs contribute to suicides in that they tend to abandon depressed people as spiritually weak. At a time when a person needs encouragement and help, the witnesses walk away and give up on the jw who mentions suicide.
So true.
so sad but true.

In my humble opinion it all comes to time. How much time do you have to allocate to religion. In any normal religion you could consider it as a "spice" i.e. something to make your life richer. However, in cults time component gets new dimension as they want all-your-time.
It is like in anything else in life, if it takes lots of your time it soon is no longer fun but a chore and if it occupies even more time it becomes first hard labour then slavery. Which is precisely what happens with cults. Humans are multitaskers and enjoy variety. Cults stifle it all for the sake of achieving something "greater" later (not now). So you keep toiling... Soon, depending on limits of ones mental powers, some people develop a view that there's no way out.
anyway just a short thesis of psychology student
The jw religion, invite people in, chew them up and spit them out! Anything good about that?
