prayers at bethel have nothing to do with thanx or appreciation...they only have to do with time keeping and general order...nobody listens to them..and most continue eating after the 2nd prayer...it more than any prayer at home by family or alone is the epitome of a meaningless ritual...in fact the more i think about it the more pharisaical it appears

Our creator has given us, not only the rich variety of food most of us have access to, but also the capacity to enjoy it- it's aromas, flavors, textures, and the simple pleasure of sharing it with friends or family. It's not just a matter of feeding an addiction.
I would agree completely if we had a choice between needing to eat and not needing to eat, but as we are compelled to eat to survive, the whole taste flavour texture business is just an after thought, the icing to mask the bottom line which is that if you believe there's a God who created us, that God made us dependent on fuel, like cars are on gas. My car doesn't say thanks when I fill it up, it just doesn't work if I don't.

Why is it I say a word of thanks when it's a "made from scratch" meal that I spent hours making for the kids and I but when I pop in a frozen dinner for myself, I don't say a thing? Now that I think about it, shouldn't it be the opposite? I should thank God for having men invent the microwave. Think I'll go do that right now.

Frog,
This reminds me of the episode in which they asked Bart Simpson to say the prayer before a meal, and this is how he prayed:
"Dear God, we payed for and cooked this food ourselves so, thanks for nothing!"
When I heard that prayer, I fell out of my couch laughing! HAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ljwtiamb:I couldn't be sure where else, but you see Jesus doing it a few times, for example at the last supper.

:I don't recall Homer coming out with "do unto others..." etc. Even Ghandi appreciated that one.
Jesus may or may not have "said" the words known as the golden rule, we'll never know, because Jesus didn't write anything down. What we do know is that even if he did, Jesus was not the first to express the golden rule concept.

In all honesty...I have about as much forethought everyday to pray to God ....just one time... that things go well enough for me at work to keep my job, that my hour commute home goes allright, and that by the time I get home I'm still alive....I thank god "for everything he has provided" and let it be at that... I find the whole idea of praying to god only before eating a bit showy, if its a special occasion with your family then I can understand... you might as well thank god for providing the air, the ground to stand upon, eyes to see, etc, etc.....
In short, I wouldnt want the communicative aspect to God to sound like winning best actress. "..and I'd like to thank my Jewish agent...."
- Preston (I knew few dubs that prayed before eating anyway...)

I was at my son's house for Thanksgiving last year, and this blessing was uttered before the meal:
We seekers after spirit know
the spirit craves the flesh, and so
we invite the spirit to this feast.gently feral

Before I eat, I generally make a brief acknowledgement of gratitude and connectedness such as, "Thank you, all my relatives" (relatives encompassing the sun, moon, air, rain, soil, plants, animals, farmers, truckers, shopkeepers, etc.). That's all.
