    Garage sales:

This varies from JW to JW and from congregation to congregation and region to region.

Only bizarre JWs in my area thought that demons were present in used clothing and other items at garage sales and thrift stores.

Many an elder's wife stopped at a garage sale duing field service on a Saturday. Other elders wives routinely went to garage sales every Friday. A pioneer sister told me about a CO stopping at a garage sale one Saturday.

I view any elders who told the rank and file not to buy things at garage sales were using it as another way to be the conscience of people in the congregation.

My JW neighbor gets most of her things from Goodwill and garage sales. She must not be too worried about demons, I guess!

Wait till you read this one. Forget yard or garage sales, An elders wife gave hand me down clothes to a wacko witness for her children, well she calls the elders wife after having the clothes for two days and says her and her husband have been fighting and they never do, so they think those clothes are demonized so could she come get them? What an insult to the kind family ,they saw a need and gave from the heart.............the clothing was promptly picked up by the elder husband and brought to the next congregation who were more than happy to recieve them.................WHAT FLAKES HUH?

There was a common belief, it seemed, that some garage sales had items that might be considered demonic ... like records and such, demonic symbols or books. They believed that if they had very obvious "demonized" items, then there might be a chance that some of their other items might be demonized. My mother would make us leave that garage sale and not allow us to buy anything. I only remember it happening a handful of times, though. Definitely not an everyday occurence, and definitely did not keep us away from all garage sales.

Did anyone else have this experience?

Yeah, this was my family too. If it was'nt for garage sales we woulda starved.

My neighbors are JW and I notice that they have fairly frequent garage sales. So I guess it's ok for them to sell their stuff because, naturally, whatever they have cannot be demonized I suppose.

There's one thing that used to piss me off about JW garage sales. I recall these two JW kids who used to inquire about things. One was collecting stamps. I had a very brief interest in stamp collecting at one time, so I gave him all my stamps. The next summer, that little prick sold the stamps I gave him at the garage sale.

Another one of these kids had asked me if I had any computers that I didn't need. I gave him one and he was very happy with it. Next summer, he sold it at his garage sale.

My mother has also had this experience with other JWs as well. She'd give them something that they inquired about, and they'd sell it.

Shania : man those people must have had a lot of gall to say the clothes were demonized. that's just down right rude.

This thread reminded me of this story: I went to a witness school. One of the familys that went there was poor. (we weren't rich) Well the girl that went there stole my coat from me. My mother was talking to one the school officials about it and we were told that the other girl needed it more than me. too bad my coat wasn't demonized i would have gotten it back....lmbo

    Shania:

I heard a story similar to this one. Talk about ungrateful! If this ever happened to me it would be over between me and that family. This is why I hesitated to give anything to anybody there. I couldn't stand all this JW insanity, conscience matters, demons, you name it!

On a funnier note, I used to know a JW who called garage sales "garbage sales".

Believe me, aude, there are some JWs that are farther out than others.

There are some JWs that fly under the radar and have enough sense not to take everything sooo seriously. Then there are others who are just plain wacko. Like the sister whose son was having a nose bleed out in service and he said "oh the blood is running down the back of my throat" the mother said "well don't swallow it. You know how Jehovah feels about blood".
