well I went for my study session today and showed her the encyclopedia articles I had printed up. she said she didn't know why the date was 586 and not 607, and asked if she could take them to show her husband. Her husband is an elder so I'm not sure what his reaction was going to be. then we continued as usual. as I was leaving i saw her reading the articles. I asked for some sort of proof for our next visit. we will see.

thanks for everyone for replying to my posts.

Tattoo, It seems as if you want to beleive they are correct for EMOTIONAL reasons. You have so much info here, yet you seem to want to fit the square pegs in the round holes. Is there an emotional reason you NEED to beleive them?

    Hi tattoogirl,

Let me take an educated guess about the answer you'll receive.

They'll say that the Israelites were restored to their homeland from Babylonian captivity by the year 537 B.C.E., and that Jeremiah prophesied that the captivity would last 70 years. So they'll back up 70 years from 537 B.C.E. to 607 B.C.E. to obtain the date for the original destruction of Jerusalem. Then they'll say that Bible chronology is more reliable than secular history, even though nearly all secular historians agree on the 586 B.C.E. date, which is not obtained through guesswork and such.

If they were to give ground on the 607 date, it could shake their whole faith, and they wouldn't likely want that to happen. But who knows, sometimes you get good surprises.

GopherEven if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

    Emotional reason? Does curiosity count.

Nothing wrong with it, so long as you investigate what you're being told (which it sounds like you're doing a good job). If you want to to explore your religious side I'd suggest going to some other churches and see what they have to offer. I attend a large nondenominational Christian church (website www.occ.org if you want to take a look). That isn't for everyone. I know a number of ex-witnesses that go to unitarian universalist, you might also find a quaker service interesting.

By all means be curious. Just don't make a final decision (and they will try to get you to make one) without all the facts.

I bet the elder comes back with NOTHING but Watch Tower materials to back up their claim.

thats a catch 22 aint it...he needs to somehow prove that secular sources back up their claim, but he dares not refer to worldly publications...should be interesting. Oh to be a fly on tatts wall !!

No I dont mean curiousity. I mean is there a hole you are trying to fill inside? Do you feel alone?
