What's this thing about guys not wanting to neuter/spay their pets?

According to yesterday's (May 1) article in Parade Magazine, one of the main causes of dogs biting is a male that's not neutered. We have a beautiful golden retriever that is about 10 months old. Sometimes he's out of control and I want to neuter the dog but my husband has steadfastly refused. The trainer at the pet store said that is quite common especially among males, not wanting to do that to another "male"...I'd like thoughts about this from anyone on the board.

I think it is a "macho" thing for some people. I don't get it either. We couldn't wait to neuter our golden. We did, and he hasn't calmed down one bit. LOL

Some people do it for breeding purposes, but, in my humble opinion, there are already too many unwanted dogs and cats on this planet -- a responsible pet owner would spay/neuter.

Growing up we had male dogs. My father always said if he were to have a female dog he would have her spayed but never wanted to neuter the male dogs. Talk about a double standard. He finally gave in to neutering their last dog because he was very out of control.

Tell your husband it is him or the dog. Two unneutered males is to much for one to handle

When I pressed him further about this, he said he wouldn't want the dog to live like that and if I went and did it anyway, he would have the dog put down...needless to say I didn't press it anymore!

Have you ever seen a post-op dog, look up at you. With a tear in it's eye and ask you, "why, why?"

Anyone remember that episode on Married With Children where Peg wanted Al to get Buck neutered? The only way Al could get out of taking Buck to the vets was to have---gasp!----SEX with Peg. Just as he's going upstairs to do the dirty deed, he turns to Buck and goes "...you owe me----BIG time."

    This discussion is painful.

If your dog is showing aggression, it is not cruel to neuter your dog. I worked in an animal hospital and the procedure for a male is quite easy and harmless. For a female, it is major abdominal surgery and it takes alot longer to recover. Sometimes men think that it will take their "manhood" away. What really happens is that when the male dog reaches "puberty" they have a hunger and biological need to have sex and often. (kind of like humans, aye?) If they can't get to the "prize" their animal desires make them frustrated and angry. It could turn the nicest dog into a violent monster.

They are not "civilized" and do not have "morals", so nothing is stopping them. ( not like humans ) Any woman that has pms and someone offered you a solution to get rid of those feelings, you would take it. That doesn't make that person any less of a woman. Hopefully, sharing this information with your husband helps.

Also, it lowers the chances of your dog getting cancer. And if your dog is the kind to "mark" their territory, if they start doing that in the house they usually won't stop.

I haven't had any problems with my dog yet and he is two years old. (see avatar) I'm wondering if I should have it done just so it lowers his chances of getting cancer. He's more of a clown then aggressive. Maybe he got lucky and has low testosterone!
