Trillian was cute. I could give her and the casting director a thumbs-up for keeping it real and using the "girl next door" in the role but again, I had the preconceived notion that she should be a lot hotter.

I think she was plenty hot! I was in love when I saw her in the shiny boxers and the large horn rim glasses. Beauty and brains in one nice package!

I was disappointed that lot's of dialogue was snipped (I am hoping for an "extended edition", a'la "Lord of the Rings"), but lest we forget, before it was a book, it was a Radio Play. Radio relies on dialogue and narration to fill in what you don't see, which becomes the reverse problem when you have a visual medium like a major film.

I'm glad it beat 'XXX-State of the Union'. I guess there was a wider appeal that what was imagined. Kinda of like the Star Trek movies....

    >> I agree about Zaphod... the character was done perfectly! (An ego larger than the universe itself).

Hmmm, to me the perfect Zaphod would be Jim Carrey. (At least that was how I pictured Zaphod when reading the books myself)

It would have been funny to see what Carrey would have ab-libbed. (some of the funniest parts in his films are just him ab-libbing.)

I'm off to see the film this weekend but from what's been said I don't think I'll enjoy it much. Also I've read the book a couple of times and thought it was an ok escapist read but not a classic in any sense. IMO the humour is mediocre, the satire too obvious and for such a short book there's more than it's fair share of dull points. I read some of the sequels and I couldn't take to those either.

The only saving grace was that other attempts at making science fiction funny like Red Dwarf and Isaac Asimov's humorous short stories were infinitely worse.

I went last weekend, it was interesting and fun at first, but eventually got long and...well it just felt slow. I think the begining went too fast with some of the enjoyable ironic bits and ideas, and people that haven't read the books might totally miss them completely--"techno babble" tends to numb some people I think. I'm glad it beat XXX-- cough [product] cough.

Thank you, brave forerunners, for sparing me money I need to spend on other things. I was going to tighten belts to see the flick at the theater, but now I know a DVD will play as well.

I absolutely loved the books. Please, tell me now, should I spare myself the disappointment and avoid even the DVD?

    Thanks in advance,

Sorry OldSoul, I never saw your post until today. But since HHGTTG is coming out (or is out) on DVD, it's a good time for a reminder that this was NOT a good movie. There is surely something better you can do with your money than buy or rent this movie.

The movie wasn't even almost mildly entertaining (imo). My kids thought it was fantastic though.

I won't be shelling out any more money on a DVD.

A friend lent it to me. It wasn't good at all. Glad I didn't waste any money on it at all, just gas bringing it back to the video store for him.
