Do world events preoccupy you?

Nope! I enjoy politics, and like to know what is going on in the world.

But when there is a large disaster or war, I curb my watching of news. Seeing events like 9/11 or the tsunami over and over again just retraumatizes us each time we watch it. Do you really think it's healthy to watch 1000s of people dying over and over again. It's not like we don't 'get it'. We KNOW it happened, right? I have enough trauma in my life. I do not need to be worrying about things I cannot change, rather than working on the problems that are closer at hand.

Being preoccupied with world events is a really good way to put off looking in the mirror, or in one's own back yard, so to speak.

I read the news on Yahoo a lot, but it's not an obsession or anything.

I found these 2 forums, and they really think that the end is close, and they aren't JW's !!!!

Dude, end-times apocalyptic thinking is hardly unique to JW's. Look at the popularity of those "Left Behind" books. I think that many Pentecostals and the like are in much more fervent expectation of the big glorious end then JW's are these days.

People in the US may be interested in world events, but the news here is lax in presenting events in other places except as they impact directly on the US. I never realized how much world news was not reported on in the US until I started listening to BBC News. When I travel in Canada, I love getting the newspaper and seeing differently the news is structured.

Not anymore they don't! There was a time I used to be up to the moment on everything. Used to read the paper while I ate lunch. Bad idea!

It is not that these things are not important because they are. It is just that I cannot do anything about them! I want whatever little bit of my life to be as happy as possible. Besides, they don't necessarily report the news, they create it! They all have agendas.

I am not responding like a pavlovian dog to anything anymore!

I love keeping up on current events...can't get enough of it. When I was brain-dead, I knew jehovah was going to take care of everything eventually, so nothing that happened in the world mattered. Now that I know that we are pretty much on our own, I follow things closely. I'm even involved in politics now, and it's great. Vote Republican!!

Blondie- Isn't it almost like a communist country, where they regulate what news is being shown!

I watch WGTE, PBS to get the BBC News sometimes, that's the only way to find out what's really going on. Scary. And why is it (in America) that every news station is covering their own version of the same material. Yet, none of them are talking about all the various things going on around the world. They just mention one or two things really quickly and then go onto what colors are coming out for spring. I can't stand the news. Yet, I always wanted to be a journalist, weird mix.

love11, I don't think the government regulates the news as much as making money. If a story wont draw viewers, it is less likely to be covered. News is a business folks.

one book I found right on my existing JWs could not have been better timed, I dont recall the name, but the premise

    was simple....

the news is always bad because the world is mostly good.

if it reverses then we are all screwed.

as long as murder is not the norm but the shocking exception, then we are not doing so bad...

    then they showed the stats....

the us has roughly 300,000,000 people, if just 1% were murdering someone each year that would be a staggering

3,000,000 murders. where the actual = United States 0.04 per 1000 people or 4 murders for every 100,000 people

that means 99.999% of the people are not murders, and similar stats exist for all other crimes.

the sky is falling people turn the insignificant into a monsterous problem.

LMAO@zen . I think you keep forgeting that people today have the ability to kill huge amounts of people with just a push of a button . Now that's the thing that keeps people in a paranoid frenzy . What's N. Korea going to do with their nukes ? What's Iran going to do ? or china or india or pakistan and how do you keep the stuff away from the really angry lunatics known as terrorists ? The world really is far more dangerous than it ever has been so citing statistics like you have is not refreshing to me . Death really doesn't scare me though but it seems politicians love to use the fear of death to manipulate the masses and even going to war .
