We had rumours about certain make of tinned luncheon meat made by Plumrose, contained blood. What made me laugh is that some JW's would avoid the product. But would eat a steak that probably contained more blood than a dozen tins of luncheon meat.
Another one was "red colouring" in sweets etc. It wasn't lecithin that was the problem here, it was "conchineal" a red colouring made from the dried crushed bodies of a certain beetle. There was panic over that for a while, until it was pointed out the Mosaic Law allowed for eating of insects (John Baptist lived on locust etc) and they certainly weren't bled. Also most of the food industry had stopped using cochineal because it became to expensive, and used an artifical colouring instead.
Another was the beef stock cube OXO, again the rumour was that it was made from blood. The makers got so fed up of JW's writing to them that they sent a letter to Bethel stating that the DO NOT in any way use blood in the making of OXO cubes.
