brubaker...where bob redford as the prison governer enters the prison undercover as a prisoner

die hard 3...summer in the city

    lethal weapon 2...smuggling krugerands

enemy of the state...car into the lake

    goldeneye...bungee off of the dam

I've always liked the opening of Star Trek VI when the Klingon moon Praxis explodes and the Excelsior encounters the blast wave. There's a certain corniness to the whole scene (now I just laugh at Zulu saying "My....God") but it's a rollicking start anyway. I also like the start of Star Trek:Generations (though the rest of the movie is goes downhill), and First Contact (which pretty much maintains the momentum).

The James Bond movies truly have some great opening sequences. Don't Look Now has a great one that's also study in great film editing, I always enjoyed the prologue to Fanny and Alexander with the moving statue. 2001's Dawn of Man sequence although long is brilliant even though not a word is spoken. Bran De Palma's Femme/Fatale has a great robbery sequence in the beginning. However, If I were to pick ONE great sequence it would have to be Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" where a 15th century monk builds a balloon and takes off with it. One of the 10 best movies ever made...

Opening of "Wild at heart" with Nicolas Cage. He beats a guy to death down a Grand Ballroom staircase in the first 30 seconds. Great scene.

For me, without doubt, the finest opening of a movie is Schindlers List.
