    I quit too despite them trying to persuade me to take a break. They did ask for it in writing but I said I felt the words were enough.

    Yes, i think an elder can quit and no-one can stop him. However, the BOE may,( if they like him!), try to talk him out of it, like by saying he could be an elder 'without portfolio' for a while.

    I doubled checked with my source and they said, of course, you can check out whenever you want, but in wiritng it will appear that the BOE gave you permission.

    You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave

    I know an elder who stood down so that he could attend his disfellowshipped son's wedding, he's an elder again now though.

    I know that elders are usually asked to step down (or do so on their own initiative) if a child of theirs has gone a bit off the rails - so if your brother was caught drunk or something, that might be enough ... This happened to a friend of mine's father.
