Seeing we're on the subject, is "State Trooper(s)" derived from that same word, or is it a totally different Noun?

Gut feeling...but back in the day most state police org's were laid out as para-military units. Early road patrols used motorcycles and back then the Horse Cavalry was still around. Early uniforms consisted of riding boots and breeches
Kind of a natural way to compare both ...Our state police troopers report to a police station known as a barracks...get the idea? The Rhode Island state police dress like mounties to this day... horseback attire even if you get a patrol car. "Smokey Bear" hats are the same as Campaign hats used by Army and USMC in the early part of the 20th century.

Interesting comments about State Troopers, etc. Who knew?
I'd have never connected the two terms like that

Annie, in Rhode Island, every tenth car on the road has a bumber sticker on it, saying....
"R.I. troopers...always there when you need them".
That's probably why it came to mind. LOL
