While riding home from work today, I noticed a "car for sale" in someones yard. It was the same yard that I saw a car for sale in last year, and made me think back to it.

Last year around this time, I was kind of looking for a used car or truck to replace the one that was literally falling apart before my eyes, when I noticed this car in a driveway, with a sign on it, saying ....."FOR SALE BY OWNER".

So, I stopped and got out to look at it, and as I approached it, I noticed it had a "dealer" plate on it!

I immediately made an about face, and headed for my old truck, and took off.

Pretty dumb for the guy to leave the "dealer" plate on it, he?

Anyone else have this kind of experience?

"Backyarding" is a fairly common practice among car salesmen. When a vehicle comes in on trade, the salesman buys it himself, and then tries to sell it privately. Most dealers frown on this, because quite often the salesman or manager will undervalue the car before selling it to themselves, thereby shortchanging the dealership. If you can trace the plate, you could report him to his employer.

On the other hand, he could own a small used car lot, but has found that selling out of his own yard works better.

Either way, it is certainly not for sale "by owner".

Yes! We have one of those "Cars" of the week right up the street. I too noticed a nice car for sale by owner..but noticed he owns a different car every week!

And he is also on the street that leads to the Assembly hall..so what the heck..

The last scam I paid any attention to and saw through was Bush's excuses to get the US into Iraq.

My wife fell for one a while back. One of those t.v. info-mercials. The one that says, "Never go to a barber ever again". She bought the hair comb with the razor in it, and tried it on me, and when it pulled out more hairs than it cut, I said, WHOA !! Throw that piece of crap away, and get out the barbers clippers! (A lot less painful).

Sometimes pretty good deals can be had thru dealers like that guy. People will pay thousands more to buy the same car from a car lot. Take advantage of that fact. "Buyer beware" no matter where you buy a car.

I once listed something for sale online. Someone sent me an email saying that they will send me a check for substantially more than the purchase price and asked that I send them the item plus the change left over from the check.

This is a classic check scam. Anyone who falls for it will send the money and product to the "buyer" and then a few days later the bank will call them to tell them that the check had bounced. At that point you would have to repay the bank the full amount and face check fraud charges.

My dad's obsessed with get rich quick scams...so one day when a pyramid scheme offer came in the mail by dad was determined to get in on it. He tried to enroll my help to deal with typing up a letter, getting names together and mass circulating this thing...he even generously offered me a cut haha. Naturally I laughed heartedly, much to my fathers disappointment. Within a couple of weeks a news report came over exposing the scam, and warning people they could be convicted if they engaged in it...
