I personally thought that 'Legends of the Fall', was one of the sadder movies Ive seen. But my personal favorite was 'My Life' with Micheal Keaton, where him and his wife find out that they are pregnant, then they find out he has cancer. Watch the movie if you havent seen it!! Notebook was slow, but still a geniune tearjerker too!

I get all weepy when I'm caught off-guard with a heart-rending plot. If I KNOW a movie will be sad, I'm prepared a bit and subconsciously distance myself I think.
That said, I was totally caught off-guard by Tale of Two Cities, 10 years ago, at the end of the film.
And Steel Magnolias' scene where the husband comes home and finds his wife on the floor with a toddler crying and a pot boiling over on the stove... wasn't prepared for that to hit me hard, either.
