  Just for fun:

  People love pets, and pets love people. See if you can match four people with their pets and their correct names.

  Here's the story:

  Buffy, Duffy, Rickie and Danny each have a pet.

  The pets are a cat, a dog, a mouse, and a parakeet.

  The pets are named Fluffy, Spot, Mickey and Vickie

  Here are the clues to help you match the people, the pets, and the names of the pets:

  1) No person's name rhymes with the name of his or her pet.

  2) No person's name begins with the same letter as the name of his or her pet.

  3) Mickey is not a mouse, and Fluffy is not a cat.

  4) Danny's pet is neither a mouse nor a parakeet.

  5) The pets with rhymng names are not parakeets, and neither of them belongs to Duffy.

  6) The parakeet does not belong to either of the people with rhyming names.

  7) Mickey does not belong to Duffy.

  You are correct. Way to go!

  The other possibility is the the Dog could be Vickie and the Cat could be Mickey.

  Argh! I don't believe it!

  That's a terrible riddle. You can't have two bloody answers for a riddle.

  I was sat there, wondering how on Earth I could figure out whether the Dog was Vickie and the Cat was Mickey, or the other way round.

  As I am somewhat stoned I slapped it into an Excel spreadsheet to see if I was missing something. Still no way of figuring it out.

  Because there IS no way of figuring it out LOL!!

  I dunno how you get the previous variation.
  My granddad was a maniac for logic puzzles, and it rubbed off.
  I get:

  • Duffy has Spot the dog
  • Buffy has Vickey the mouse
  • Rickie has Fluffy the Parakeet
  • Danny has Mickey the cat

  I don't get this clue:

  2) No person's name begins with the same letter as the name of his or her pet.

  Not a single person's name starts with the same letter as a pet. How is this a clue? Is there an error here? Should this be "type of pet"? (e.g. Danny/dog, Duffy/dog).

  Meanwhile, clue #7 is superfluous to #5.

  Here is my solution:

  Now, if we revise clue #2 so that it refers to "type of pet" rather than "name of pet" (so that "No person's name begins with the same letter as their kind of pet"), then we would have Danny = *dog and Duffy = *dog. This would then resolve the ambiguity, and Danny's pet would be a "cat" and Buffy's pet would be a "dog".

  I made an error, first time round, transposing the dog and the mouse.

  After all the confusion I Googled it and found the original question, but not the solution.
  Clue #2 should read "type of pet" not "name of pet", and clue #7 should read "Buffy" not "Duffy".
  That explains the redundancies.

  The result is:

  • Buffy - Dog called Vickie
  • Duffy - Mouse called Spot
  • Rickie - Parakeet called Fluffy
  • Danny - Cat called Mickie

  NOW I can go back to bed!!!
