I used to be a therapist (long after being a jw myself) and happened to treat some jw rape victims. I also had to treat perps. Kids and adults in both categories. Not fun.

The main reason I moved into a non-clinical role is because it is so horrifying to hear about and see the pain they're in. It's sickening beyond anything I could ever convey with words. I still get teary whenever I think about it, and I'm not an emotional person by any means.

Language is certainly one of the big issues in the beginning of therapy for victims. They tend to use inappropriate words--either way too graphic for the group to handle (flashbacks, nightmares), or words that minimize what really happened, such as described in the article. Often victims need to learn a vocabulary before they can be helped.

If you think about the words in the article, often they are designed to remove blame from those responsible. I mean, child prostitution? Yeah right. Prostitution is a voluntary act that has no business being used to describe child sex slavery.
