The Tacoma Narrows Bridge Not Destroyed By Demons!

Who hasn't seen the infamous black and white film footage from 1940 of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge waving and twisting before finally collapsing into the water? Last night on the History Channel they were examining an airplane crash from the 1950's and telling about how the engineers determined that there was an aerodynamic anomaly for the crash called "flutter" and that these principles of flutter were also in affect when the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed.

I thought back to when I was a child and saw this famous footage on "You Asked For It" and my grandmother had us switch the channel because it was demons that were making the bridge twist like that. I believed it for a while and was scared to death whenever that footage was replayed on TV. Eventually, as I grew up, I realized that there was a perfectly logical and scientific explanation for it. And now the History Channel has given me a name for it. "Flutter!" Thanks you guys at HC. You rock!

If Gramma was still alive, I could tell her so she wouldn't have to be afraid any more.

Do you have any demon stories in your family that have perfectly normal explanations? How long were you scared sh!+less as a kid by these senseless paranoid tales? Aren't you glad you don't have to be scared of that stuff any more? It's so good to be free... isn't it?

    Wow. Very sad.

I love science in general and in high school I was taking an Astronomy class. Once word got out in my congregation I had to explain to the elders the difference between Astronomy and Astrology.

Another time I was in FS with your classic "everything I don't understand is caused by demons" woman. I happened to mention that I had a neat little hologram at home and she started to go off about how holograms are demonic. I had to explain to her how holograms worked... but even that was not enough. I ended up having to use a shiny plastic card I had in my wallet to demonstrate how a hologram can be created by slightly bending the card. (This creates a small reflection that appears to hover an inch or two above the surface). After seeing that she finally accepted that holograms were NOT made by demons.

How about the fact that you had to be careful buying used things at a garage sale because it might be demonized. But if it's new in its package then you don't have to worry. Yeah...cause demons can't get through shrinkwrap!

    The Silver Bridge was however.

Or so a jaydub would think watching the Mothman Prophecies.

Funny you should bring the Tacoma Bridge incident up, because I just heard about it for the first time a few days ago. I grew up on the east so I guess that was one demonic urban legend exclusive to the west…or perhaps just before my time?

I guess as kids, my circle of friends were so skilled in the area of demon alertedness that we could freak our parents out. Cause, once, when I was 8, in antique store w. my mom, another sister, and her kids…. one of the other kids knocked a precious antique plate off a shelf, shattering it. We all saw it happen but did not want to get the kid who did it in trouble, so we didn’t say anything. When pressed, he said something like, “(Gasp)…It rolled off the shelf on its own!” They grabbed our arms and ran with us out of the store saying jehovah's name out loud, no doubt. To this day they are all, “remember the demonic antique store?” wa haha. (my best evil laugh)

LOL. That was one cool thing about childhood… blaming crap on the supernatural. Looking back, I wish I had used it more… like, “the demons ate my homework”, and “no, the demons punched my sister, pulled her hair, and locked her out of the bedroom for stealing my clothes.”

We were always told not to buy things from car boot sales because items might be demonised. I think a sister thought she had a demonised collander once.

I used to be frightened of leaving the troof because I thought the only way to protect yourself from demon attack was by being a dub. Its only since i left i realise the dubs are just obsessed with the bad ghosty fellas, and probably all that talking about it is more of an invitiation to the party than just ignoring them alltogether. So personally I think the only people who are demonised are dubs because they are always talking about it.

I am glad I never heard this rumor, and to heck with that! I read on CNN.com that this woman bought a chair at a garage sale and found $3,000 in the cushions. I wish I could get that lucky at the garage sale.

If the demons brought her that money, bring on the demons! LOL!

Yeah. Apparently, nothing died, came back to life, and crawled into my dad's ass. He just had indigestion.
