I wish I had titled this thread "Paradise Lost"!

Thanx y'all for your well-wishes. Some of you have really surprised me! And yes, if we win the lottery big, I'll buy a computer first thing!!!

This trip, we'll be on the 12th floor. Anything above the 2nd floor of this building Bayshore Tower is supposed to be tsunami-safe - as long as the footings and piers hold. Yes, the waterfront park in Hilo is beautiful! and I know it used to be inhabited. It seems fitting that the Tsunami Museum is housed in a Bank Building that was built to withstand tsunami's! The history of Hawaii, and of Hilo is colourful and incredible. Damned Calvanists!

It's been our prior two trips to the Big Island that has us convinced to move to the Hilo area. I was on the island less than 24 hours before I told Kevan "this is IT, isn't it?" and he said "Yeah, I think so". Up until that moment, I was ready to move to Mexico.

I've not been on the other islands (except Honolulu airport), but Big Island is big enough to have pleanty of non-tourist businesses and easy access to building materials, etc - Hilo being the 2nd largest city in the State at 48,000 people. It's also very beautiful, if more rainy than Kona, and less touristy. The Island is big enough to not feel so much like you're on an island, with so many micro-climates - tropical, desert, rainforest, to alpine and arctic there is great choice of living environment. It also has the cheapest gas in the state!

Hilo is a wonderfully laid back town. People are friendly and easy going. The Hilo Market is awesome! 3 - 5 papaya for a $1.

When we buy it will likely be upslope - above tsunami level. I've also decided that N of Hilo - N of the Wailuku river is better than S, because you're on the flanks of Mauna Kea which hasn't erupted in over 6,000 years. S of the Wailuku river, and you're on the flanks of Mauna Loa, which last errupted in 1985, and has been grumbling for a couple years.

24 hours from now I'll be halfway there. That rock out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean called Oahu. Then a 2 hour layover, and a 45 minute flight to Kailuah Kona - Big Island. Pick up car and luggage and drive around island to Hilo. Cars are less expensive in Kona than Hilo!

Netty. Yes, I am a lucky woman. And yes, I am an apostate. I didn't become one until I came to this site - I didn't eve know what it meant! Now I'll happily be an apostate from a publishing company.
