My grandfather (Bible Student) told me about some brothers who put their foot in the door to encourage the householder to listen to the whole presentation.
I remember as a kid, a lot of the old timers would spend long periods of time at the door, arguing with anyone who would give them the time. I used to wonder, even as a kid, why argue? If they just want to argue, aren't we wasting our time?
We had on old sister in one congregation that was from the Bible Student days. She used to stick her foot in the door to make people listen.
I was at the door with an elder one time who, when the householder had had enough and tried to close the door, he pushed the door open with his hand and wedged himself in the doorway forcing the guy to finish listen to him. I was mortified and embarrassed. That was the last door that I ever went to a door with that guy. If that is his typical M.O., I'm surprised he hasn't gotten shot yet.
In all the years of my door-to-door work, I can recall all kinds of bad behavior....more on the part of the JWs than on the householder. I used to think householders were rude for not giving us the time of day, or slamming the door...but looking back on it, if they experienced any of the bad behavior that I saw from JWs at the door, who can blame them?
