Would you once have let your child die for want of a blood transfusion?

It just really pisses me off that children (and yes, adults) are put on display to make the elders/parents look like perfect JWs. When my sister was 5 she was playing on the yoke of one of those old utility trailers. It feel on her, tearing her eyeball and cratering her head. Back then, they could not find a Dr. to operate on her. They were willing to let her bleed to death!!!! Finally an older dr agreed to operate. She made it with flying colors. They had to wire her eyeball in 3 places. She has perfect vision. They displayed her around like a fread show.

Some of you may have read about this. If so, please ignore. When I became a nurse, I VOWED that if it were within my powers, that would never happen if I could help it.

To make a long story short, I was working trauma in a large hospital in Dallas. My patient was 4 yrs old and required blood to live. The elders showed up all pompous acting, trying to throw their weight around. I knew that they were putting pressure on the young parents. Within 30 minutes the surgeon and I met with the ethics committe. Within 90 minutes the hospital had guardianship. The elders were trying to get the parents to run with the child. I had security up there by their door, no visitors posted. But what was priceless, I can't even describe how it felt to have 3 elders escorted from the hospital and banned from the property. Later the mom thanked me for taking the burden off them. She asked me how I knew what to expect from the elders before they even knew. I told her I grew up as a JW. It was left at that. I guess they mentioned it to an elder. They tried to have me removed as her nurse, then tried to have me fired. The hospital stood firm behind me!!

I was also able to intervene in another case, with the same results. I always think of my little sister.

Thank goodness I was OUT before I had children. Can't imagne what I would have been pressured to do, if the situation ever arose.

I was raised a dub, but knew the blood theory was baloney, so if I would have had kids while still being a dub, I can honestly say I would have given my kids a chance at life.

Now that I myself am a mother, I cannot begin to comprehend how these dub women could possibly let their babies die.

crazyblondedeb, good job on having the elders booted out! To bad you didn't have camera, that was a Kodak moment.

One day shortly after I left the org, the realization came to me that I would have allowed my childen to die because of that cult. That was one of the worst day of my life

Me, too! It's sick, but at one point, I would have done so.

    crazyblonde,

I don't think you're 'crazy'. I think you're great ! I LOVE ya' ! I wish you had been around when I had my 'test of faith'.

I am SO glad you are an X-JW and a nurse ! You are in a perfect position to help patients whether they realize they need it or not. It hard to believe the parents treated you that way after helping save their child. Get you fired ? That's sad, they could have just thanked you and let it go quietly.

I guess they got frightened later when they realized a dreaded Ex-Witness maybe even an Apostate, was caring for their child.

    Kudos for you Shelley !

Yes, I passed the 'ultimate' test of faith too.

When my son was 18 months old his bowel collapsed and he needed an emergency operation. Of course being a good little JW I refused to sign the consent form to allow a blood transfusion. Waiting for my son to come out of the operating theatre was the longest night of my life. My son survived and is now a healthy 17 year old with his whole life ahead of him thanks to the fantastic work of the doctors. I resent it bitterly that I could have ended his life by following the rules of a cult.

Strangely though I was out less than four months later.
