In some countries parents only want male children (e.g. China). What would happen to the female population if they were able to genetically manipulate their offspring to be only male?

On a tangent from that idea, what would happen to the WORLD population if we were able to genetically cure all diseases in the womb? We'd have nowhere to put everyone and our natural resources would be quickly depleted.

Hi, your first statement is an answer for the second

Your second statement is a bit like, don't solve this problem, maybe there are other problems coming. If you think this is really a problem are you not pro for spreading some extra diseases, some extra wars etc.

Those things are not that close related. Both can only be solved with education

tetrapod - thank you for pointing out the contradictions in my argument - i think i meant gender selection rather more than actually messing with the genes so much.

genetically modified food isn;t better for you though! organic is the best surely.

I'm fairly sure that this is coming. The next generation will be a lot less resistant to the idea, then, in it comes as part of the standard culture.

There are always bugs in new tech. But, they are gradually worked out. I mean, look at how persnikety the first cars were; they tended to overheat, not having water pumps, you had to go around the front and hand turn a crank to start the thing. If it backfired, it could break your arm. Etc, etc. Genetic manipulation is similar. It's now in it's infantile stage, or even premature stage.

Crumpet, maybe it is not better, but probably just the same. Not better not worse for you.

gen. modified food is organic. Why so afraid of the unknown?

One thing I'm not too sure about is cloning - I'm not comfortable with that. I think that's just going too far.

    loubelle,

nature already clones humans with some slight embryonic mutation. what's the problem? i would like to see children not born with defects.

    crumpet,

    no worries, just having fun.

organic food is very good, no doubt. i love the stuff. but it only seems like the best due to hindsight. nature takes so long to make food "better", and/or us humans take so long to get "better" at utilizing it. that is hindsight biologically. food can be gentically modified and grown organically. i would say this is the best of both worlds.
