What can you do to protect your family from the elders?

  I have a question I hope someone can answer for me.

  My folks are sick and elderly dubs and I worry the borg will hasten their death. They have those ridiculous blood card with an advanced directives pre-printed on them. They also have a person from the cong designated as their surrogate? in the event they cannot speak for themselves.

  Now what can I do if my JW folks were in need of a blood transfusion? How can I prevent the elders or cong from interfering in their medical care?

  Can I kick them out, or request no visitors? What happens if the elders get to the hospital before you do? And what about that Surrogate person?, they are not related, thus I feel they should have no say in my parents medical treatment, how can they override me, their daughter? Does the court respect them (surrogate) or me a blood relative?

  As far as your parents go, if they sign the decision over, then that's their choice.

  If your parents are willing to complete new Health Care forms & DPA forms, you can go to nolo.com and get some good information and forms. If they're willing to fill out new forms do not use the WTS forms, use some unbiased forms.

  If your parents are unwilling to complete new forms and want to stand by what they already have, I'm not sure of your options...if there are any. If your parent(s) have to go into the hospital, and are unconcious, you (or whoever) is there may have to fill out some hospital forms. The forms ask for religious affiliation and permission to allow visitors. If you are able to fill out the forms you can reject visitation, and do not answer JW on the religious affiliation question. This may not have much effect, especially if someone else is listed as their proxy.

  If your parents have filled out healthcare proxies in line with the state they are living in and have selected a JW to act as their representative, it will not be easy to override their wishes. But check with a lawyer in your area and see if it is possible to set it aside because you are a close relative. Do it now too, don't wait until the emergency arises.

  I wish I had some great advice for you Dragonlady, but I don't. I do know that the vultures will be landing and then hovering around your parents whenever they get wind of a problem.

  Good grief! I only broke my leg a few years ago, could speak for myself and was quite capable of doing just that. The PO was at the hospital BEFORE I was when it came time for my surgery!!!

  They are sly and pushy and I was a bit embarrassed over the fuss about me at the Nurses station. I HAD let my surgeon know that I wouldn't take blood---and he said it wouldn't have been necessary anyway! Much ado about nothing.

  Yes, they are following mindless edicts from a cult, edicts that are potentially harmful. But are they not adults that have held these beliefs for a long time?

  Don't you cherish your right to make your own choices, right or wrong? Don't you feel it is up to you to decide for yourself?
