2 Chronicles 24 on the other hand: Joash commands the priests and Levites to go out and collect from the people monies for the repairs every year. They are not quick to begin this collection(no mention of 23 years!) so the king 'reminds' the High priest that Moses had imposed a tax for this purpose. The Chronicler then claims the Temple's disrepair is because wicked idolator Athalia had stolen the monies. The King then directs a collection box be put outside the Temple gate. The resulting super generous gifts are distributed by the king and H. Priest and are enough to pay for all repairs and the gold and silver vessels and paraphenalia. The collection is to continue from year to year. The story continues with the Arameans attacking and looting Jerusalem, it's Temple and palace.
The stories continue at variance with the place of death of Joash etc.but the mony collection was of interest to me. Notice that the Levites have a role in Chronicles but not Kings and the H.Priest has authority not given him in Kings. The box is in the Temple in Kings wereas the Chronicler's sentivities compelled him to relocate the box to outside the Temple. The whole complaint about the Priest's neglect of the care for the Temple is lost in Chronicles and blame is shifted to a wicked Queen. The collection is said to be made annually in Chronicles but only once for a specific purpose in Kings. The monies were only enough for repairs but not the gold and silver funishings in Kings but much more generous in 2Chronicles and all the gold and silver is paid for. It becomes obvious from this comparison that the Chronicler desired a better image for the priesthood and Levites. He also wanted to create a tale that endorsed generosity and annual giving for the Temple and priesthood.
