Since a pretty good number of you have been to university and since the Arts Academic Advisors are always booked, I'll pose this question:

What do you think of my course schedule for next year (keep in mind, my only real goal is learning; I'm not working towards a job):

    - Latin (6 credits)
    -Classical Greek (6)
    -Classical Myth and Religion (6)
-Linguistic Theory and Analysis I (3)
-Linguistic Theory and Analysis II (3)
-History of the Christian Church (6)

Now the only important ones, to me, are the top three, since I'm majoring in Classics. Or I could do something like this (note: assume top three is in there):

    -Logic and Critical Thinking (3)
    -Knowledge and Reality I (3)
    -History... or Linguistic... from above.

Or as a third choice, I could take out Classical Myth and Religion and put in those two philosophy courses above and the Linguistic ones too.

Latin is great, I took it for three years and loved it ... it`s so symmetrical, too bad we don`t really know how it was spoken ...

    I`d go with this :

    -Logic and Critical Thinking (3)

    -Knowledge and Reality I (3)

    -History... or Linguistic... from above.

I reckon these would be most helpful because a lot of the Classical Greek and the myth and religion is based around rhetorical principles (even the apostle Paul used it)

    -Logic and Critical Thinking (3)

    -Knowledge and Reality I (3)

then with the linguistics if you want a totally classical line

or the church history if you want to develop along the religious line

Good luck - rather you than me, I'm currently on a theology degree!

First of all, thanks to all for the suggestions so far.

Good luck - rather you than me, I'm currently on a theology degree!

Good luck with that too. What kind of theology degree? (coincidentally, I'm interested in doing that, perhaps Anglican Studies at Regent College or something else).

    Thanks for your good wishes.

It's 'just' general Christian theology. I decided not to specialise into any particular strand (there was a choice of Biblical, church history or applied) so I'm getting a good mix of modules ranging from studying individual books of the Bible to the heavy doctrinal/systematic theology - which does have a Reformed slant to it.

Any chance you can add sociology of religion? Gives a good insight in meaning and functioning of religious institutions.

I'm not in college as I can't afford it and too old for the stress. But some of the college lectures courses I am listening and learning from The Teaching Company has been:

    Historical Jesus

    Philosophy of Religion

Ancient Religions of the Meditarranean World

    New Testement Studies

    Old Testement Studies

World Religions, Judaism, Chrisitanity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam

If I could go to college and major in something it would be in working toward a degree in religion and become a teacher. I find it utterly fascinating. Too bad I wasted all my prime years with the JW's.

Hope you enjoy all those wonderful and eduational courses. Good for you. Education is the door to thinking.

Sounds excellent! I'm also majoring in Arts.......I've already taken some of the courses you've mentioned, and I plan on taking more. There's one called Psychology of Religion and New Age Cults (guess which religion will be covered in this course?? I outta get 100% in this one!)

I would also recommend maybe taking a couple of courses in Archaeology, if you're majoring in Classics as the two are closely related.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I've kind of melded all the suggestions into one:

    Latin
    Classical Greek
    Hellenistic Greek
Linguistic Theory and Analysis I & II
Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking
Introduction to Classical And Near-Eastern Archaeology

Back to my summer re-learning of Greek...

If you want a sequence, I'd take these first:

    Logic and Critical Thinking

    Knowledge and Reality

After those, the others you listed are pretty much up for grabs, with obvious sequential limits.
