I guess some of the theological students on here would be able to help with that. I recently read this brilliant article, which is worth a look re women's place in 1st century Christianity.

Bellan-Boyer, Lisa, ‘Conspicuous in Their Absence: Women in Early Christianity’, Cross Currents, v53 i1, Spring 2003, p48(17).

In this article, Bellan-Boyer brilliantly reconstructs women’s place in early Christianity, and blames male leaders for sacrificing women’s religious rights in order to construct a unified church.

There's a book called New Testament Times by Merrill C. Tenney that I have been using as a background reference for a New Testament Survey course I'm taking. It looks pretty interesting, and I'm eventually hoping to find time to read the entire thing.

    Amazon has it HERE.

The Didache, its not an anthropological work, but it is a primary document.
