Is the UN really the disgusting thing?

The UN was once the League of Nations and at that time, 1919, Christendom hailed the League as God's means of bringing peace to the earth...putting it in the place the Messianic kingdom should be in referring to the 1st century when the Roman army took the place of the temple in Jerusalem (disgusting thing).  The WTS has changed the timing of that to a future one.

What will signal the start of the great tribulation? Jesus foretold: “When you catch sight of the disgusting thing that causes desolation, as spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in a holy place, (let the reader use discernment,) then let those in Judea begin fleeing to the mountains.” (Matt. 24:15, 16) In the first fulfillment, the “standing in a holy place” occurred in 66 C.E. when the Roman army (“the disgusting thing”) attacked Jerusalem and its temple (a place holy in the eyes of the Jews). In the larger fulfillment, the “standing” will occur when the United Nations (the modern-day “disgusting thing”) attacks Christendom (which is holy in the eyes of nominal Christians) and the rest of Babylon the Great. The same attack is described at Revelation 17:16-18. That event will be the beginning of the great tribulation.

Well, I'll go to the  foot of our stairs .!.....

That nugget of spiritual untruth passed me by completely. I thought we were still in the days of complaining about the Churches view of the League. In fact there is a WT in 1999

    WT 99 5/1 p17
17 We know that desolation awaits false religion. Babylon the Great is “drunk with the blood of the holy ones” and has acted as a queen, but her destruction is certain. The unclean influence she has wielded over the kings of the earth will dramatically change as that relationship turns into one of violent hatred on the part of the ‘ten horns and the wild beast.’ (Revelation 17:6, 16; 18:7, 8) When the “scarlet-colored wild beast” attacks the religious harlot, “the disgusting thing” will be standing in a menacing way in Christendom’s so-called holy place. So desolation will begin on faithless Christendom, which portrays itself as holy.

Thanks Blondie - I bet we know more about their beliefs than most dubs do themselves

As for the original question? The U N O may be a long way from perfect, but "disgusting?" No. ...

NB at the time that they wrote that 1999 Watchtower, they were of course an N G O affiliate of what they called "disgusting" , what does that make them???

When I had searched for what the bible may be really saying about the disgusting thing causing desolation standing in a holy place, many scriptures closely related to me seemed to be something beyond human and beyond looking for a actual person.

The WT changed around what 2 Thess 2:3-5 say.  It links up with other scriptures too.  But the mystery, man of lawlessness, who sits in the seat of God showing himself to be God. That's really what it should say, someone who tricks people into thinking he is God.  Would the seat of God be a holy place?

I don't feel like getting real deep into this topic and all I looked up about it, but that's the quick fast and easy explanation of what I think it's really talking about.

EOM, that is exactly my end thought.. In my analysis, I was comparing where else in the bible a disgusting thing is mentioned, and in most cases it refers to false worship during the times of Israel. The WT always mentions as much when it comes to making parallels of the UN mission and the kingdom, saying it is wrong for the UN to bring about claims of worldwide peace. Putting asides wether we like what the UN does or not, just claiming peace does not seem to me like it is enough to be called on. If the UN was to displace God's kingdom on its function, it would have to claim to do more than just bring pace. That is why I was proposing wether the bible refers to something else, more religiously oriented.

This is a great thread, STAngel, and vidiot really good points. Blondie, I had forgotten about 1919 being the League of Nations formation...,and of course if Christians were behind it, the witnesses were going to be against it.

I don't see how the UN could be the beast. I feel this way because the beast represents some political entity with real power. The UN just doesn't really do anything.

Because of a recent thread I'm going to refrain from posting my thoughts on this subject further unless asked. I do have theories on the beast identies.
