Just wondering what your experiences are.
Were you "encouraged" not to devote time to personal exercise, gym or sport in general?
I remember this one time CO gave a talk how "we do not need sport" then he proceeded to explain how walking up the stairs in field service was exercise enough for our legs, then how we didn't need any stretching exercise as making gestures while explaining the bible verses would do the job, and so on. You get the picture anyway.
What was your experience? Perhaps some of you could also have had a shot at professional sport but were discouraged from it.

Sick ... mind-control ... bulsh*t!
I remember one sister being discouraged from getting massages ... others sis's thought it was immoral to have a man touching you .
I don't recall off-hand hearing anything as bizarre as 'fs is all we need' lmao. The certainly didn't ENCOURAGE health and excercise. Armygetton was right around the corner (must be one hell-uv-a long block!)

Recreation sports was ok. We always did some sport (football, tennis or whatever) with the whole congregation. Including most of the elders (not the ones very 'near to the gate').
However a person can not be a MS or elder if he plays competitive sports. although I did and all elders knew, but not the CO
Proffesional sport is out of the question

Anything extracurricular was highly discouraged. That gestures = stretchiing excercises is just plain weird. The things they will say to the rank and file, who duh, sit there like zombies and buy it all.

Their propaganda is that physical exercise is of little use and that the dubs should concentrate rather on spiritual exercising which means meetings, fs, fighting the fleshly passions.

sports were always okay for me. or if i was brow-beaten about it, i never took notice.
but my competitive streak is completely squashed now. actually, speaking of squash, i love it, but i never win. not competitive enough.
i was always i big hiker and trekker, though.
never really been into team based field sports, even as a dub. never went to congregation sporting events. or if i did, it was always on the bleachers no matter how much razzing i got from testosterone oozing JW jock cocks.

I encouraged and facilitated my son playing sports and coached baseball for years. No one said anything to me since they knew it was not forbidden in the bible and I was not one to be triffled with over non-issues.
He's a multi sport varsity player now and the whole family is out.
Having the friends we made in sports has been a BIG help in leaving the cult with a measure of social life to look forward to.

Some brothers in the cong used to play basketball on Tuesday evenings. We also used to get to play football on saturdays after service.
The only people allowed to come were grown people who cared about playing. Little kids used to ask if they could come, and we would tell them we didn't want them to get hurt. Well the wrong kids were wanting to play (not 3 year olds- like 12-13 year olds), and they spouted off to the elders and they shut us down.
An experience was given at the DC about a pioneer sister who joined a gym, and committed fornication with someone she met there. They were discouraging gym membership.
I could be playing high school football now. I could be getting a scholarship to college for football too. Bastards.

I think this depends on which KH you are going to. At our old KH the elders all worked out together at Golds Gym and also played basketball together.
My husband grew up playing hockey with a lot of the brothers and almost all of them still go to meetings and play hockey.

It was discouraged in our area to let your children play on organized "worldy" sports teams, although one elder who ran his own business and drove a cadillac ,,,had lots of money and donated lots of money to the hall,,,, had his son and daughter in organized sports....No one said a word to him about that........ Some brothers used to rent a ice rink to play hockey together late Sunday nite. ...It seemed as long as you were playing with other brothers,,,it was acceptable in our area......
