I am proud to say that I belonged to a cult but smartened up/

I tell people I was raised in a cult. They usually ask, "What, like a Satanic cult?" I say no, Jehovah's Witnesses and they understand. I don't hide it though, it gives me a great chance to explain how awful the JW's actually are.

I used to feel like I was hiding something if I didnt tell people I was a witless, then when I left I felt like i was hiding something if i didnt tell them I used to be a witless.

Now ive almost forgotton I used to be one, except you guys keep reminding me

Blondie, you just reminded me of a converstation I had this past weekend. On the subject of jws coming to your door. The friends (inhabitants) where all ready for them, donned robes (4-5 people) one answered the door while the others where in the background acting out a ceremony of sorts and warmly invited the witnesses in to discuss their beliefs. heheheheh, they, the witnesses, I was told ran away sooooo fast and never have come back!

There are very few that know I was raised a JW, mostly very close friends. Generally, I don't like to bring up the past.

When I was "active in the congregation I avoided the issue at all costs. I hated going out in service in my own neighborhood. Heaven forbid any of my class mates see me. I'll never forget the time it was my turn to talk and whose house was it? Only the biggest, strongest, most loud mouth beligerent jock in the whole school. I knew that the next day was going to be pure hell.

Now it doesn't bother me one bit to discuss it openly. I dont go out of my way to start conversations about it but if discussing religion I dont hesitate to relay my experiences.

Not at all, often people understand me better for knowing my history.

I don't hide it. If it comes up then I let people know. People at work see me perusing this site and ask me about it. I tell them a bit about it and a few of them now lurk on this very board.

I have found that it helps people understand some of my idiosyncrasies and accept them. Especially when I was still developing normal social skills...

I think for many of us we will never be able to deny our situation regarding the witnesses.

It will be with me for the rest of my life, though it does not run my life.

As far as telling others, some people know. But I don't go out of my way to talk about it.
