  I can remember brothers and sisters from the 30's and 40's saying they always said they weren't part of a religion.

  The problem with Rutherford and all jw leaders that follow in his footsteps, their annoying habit of redefining the basic and universally accepted meaning of words. Religion never had to be an invariably bad word.

  Vocabulary is always changing and the WTS prides itself on saying it can spot malingering JWs or ex-JWs because they don't keep up on the lingo.

  congregation servant - congregation overseer - presiding overseer

  district assembly - district convention

  congregation book study conductor - congregation book study overseer

  not a religion - true religion

  It is one of the gnat things the WTS uses to deflect the rank and file's attention from the real problems.

  I remember while growing up in a fundamentalist, evangelical Christian environment the term "religion" was considered a bad thing too. "Religion" implied a structure of "traditions of men", only detracting from a "personal relationship with God".
