Well I wanted to title the thread as follows, but it doesn't fit. So the title is a summary, not meant to imply we can change a supreme court decision.

"Angry at the Berry verdict and the issue of JW child abuse as a whole? Here's what you can do to help raise public awareness, which may at least help us gain something positive (public awareness of the heinous nature of this cult) out of something negative (court decision and girls who were victimized)"

Rebel----now THAT'S a totally different thing. I agree that if the WT. can be exposed, future cases could be handled in plaintiff's favor.

Those things will not affect the court.

Not this time unless to go on to the Supreme Court. But changing the laws will affect the court. Courts make their decisions based on the laws. Laws have been changed in Wisconsin regarding statute of limitations and who is required to report. Educating the legislators that make these laws will help future cases. Educating the DA and other people with influence in the legal system will help. So doing the things SNAP suggests (and has done) can help in the future. The fact that SNAP has made the progress they have are based on many people being willing to do these things buying time and money out of their personal lives. Blondie

It is grossly unfair, but the judges have to go by the law, not by what seems right. I hate it, but that's the system in this country.

I suspect all of the similar cases will end up like this one.............unless State laws make it possible for a different decision. So far, not much good has happened.

    MULAN,

As you say Judges have to go by the law of the land so they will surely understand if some choose to picket them outside their house or courthouses, and the same for the kingdom halls where these outrages go on. Americans do have the right to picket. It's called Freedom of Expression.

DANNY HAZARD, why not work with SHUNNED FATHER, Bill Bowen, Randy Watters and others to let more people know that though this shame goes on, it will not go on unheralded!

Can someone hummor me please. There is a part that states:Elders were barred by the Religious Privilege from disclosing any of the allegations or admissions to anyone and thus no duty to report the allegations could have arisen.

What religious privlege? Is that like a priest hearing confession? Aren't the elders different than other clergy? I mean, that's what they claim. How can they use this if they are so proud of the fact that they are different?

If that's not what it means, can someone explain it to me, please.

momofmany, if you click on the first link, the court's opinion is explained on all the questions you raise.

Just wanted to point out to everyone that Silent Lambs has some public awareness materials already prepared and ready for download on the page I imbedded above. My faves are the ones that are the size of business cards. It simply says "stop child abuse" and has a web site/phone #. Easy to put up on bulletin boards all around your community and it won't raise too much suspicion. If people walk by while you're doing it, they just think you're putting up your business cards.

I feel these materials go way beyond their value as child abuse education materials. It is also a great way to educate the general public about the danger of JWs in general.

I put some up last night and will be doing some more today.

    Rebel8,

How upsetting to see that the WT keeps getting away with it.

I would like to know what will it take to get some laws changed and for judges to set precedents that are actually helpful.

I think its sad that religion is above the court systems power. They should be held liable just as any individual or other corporation is.
