Yes that is one of the goals. But the main goal is to create strong minded girls who grow into strong minded women. The patriotism is there but it's not overwelming. Also with all the activities the Girls scouts have to do it's very mind expanding for the girls, they are exposed to a lot of stuff. It's all good and fun, I wished I could have been one in school.

Yeah, I agree with everything here. Who cares about christmas and birthdays (strangely, that`s what people that don`t know much about JWs, think is the most cruel part of the religion, for children). Apart from all the Armageddon-crap I had shoved down my throat, which damaged me severely, the first post said: "as teenagers have to suppress sexual urges at the time when they are at their most intense."
I`ll tell you a story (I`m not even embarassed, masturbating is the most natural thing in the world, and I`m damn proud of it! ): When I was around 13, I started (as all boys do), jacking off...yes, you heard me! So, I was in the bathroom once, strangling the snake like theres no tomorrow, when I heard a sound in behind me, in the window (our bathroom was in the basement, with a small window behind/above me, when I was sitting on the toilet). I turn around, and hear my little brat-sister and her friend running away, giggling (they had obviously been spying on me). Well, I thought nothing more of it, and jacked on (off/on etc, the sexual drive of boys at that age is astonishing, ahh, those were the days..).So, the next day, my mom tells me where going to have dinner at one of the elders house. We get there, sit down, and then he reads the daytext, and guess what its about: ONAN, and his sin towards God! I had just been caught masturbating by my little sister, and then I`m taken to an elders house to hear a lecture on masturbation! What a coincidence. So, he reads the text, I`m forced to answer all the question etc ((yes, it was wrong what Onan did...yes, and God punished him, he wont get to live in the 1000year-reign, etc...(and obviously, neither will I)). Who cares about the 1000year-reign, right there, in that situation, I just wanted God to kill me on the spot, or sink into the ground, whatever, I was so embarassed, red from the neck up, god! So of course, after that, I continued masturbationg (sexual urges are stronger than any elder, they`d have to cut my hands of to make me stop), but I developed this (I`m not sure if I developed this after or before the visit at the elders house, it could just as well has been before) washing-thing, extreme cleanliness, that I had to take a shower everytime I had been to the bathroom in our house. It seemed dirty to me, somehow, but it only had to do with the bathroom in our house, noone elses. Yeah, thanks a lot, mom. Just rot on in your grave!

The patriotism is there but it's not overwelming.

But I can see why JWs are "discouraged" from participation. Of course, buying girl scout cookies is a "different" thing.

Of course, buying girl scout cookies is a "different" thing.

Those cookies are good! My mother buys a few boxes every year.

I had no friends in the regular school system growing up. I never did any extracurricular activities.

I would've loved to have been on a sports team, or to have learned to play a musical instrument and be in the school band.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! We had the time so occupied in meetings, field service, preparing for meetings, assemblies, and those silly JW get-togethers filled with silly biblical games and other non-interesting stuff.

When a holiday came around we would either not be sent to school, or be sent to school only to spend most of the day at the school library or the principal's office during the celebrations. IT WAS AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I swear it constitutes emotional abuse on a child. I feel so sorry for the kids of JWs. They're missing so very much!!!

The ultimate loyalty was to the organization. So there was an atmosphere that encouraged family betrayal.

All of my neighbors were going to die...including their pets!

Embarrassing, deeply personal topics inappropriately explored in-depth at the Kingdom Hall.

Extreme isolation. Very little opportunity for normal socialization. All alone in a "great crowd".

And don't get me started on the loving rod of discipline...

I'm with you. I sometimes wonder if I will ever be able to have a normal relationship with anyone. It's very tough just to make and keep connections that most people take for granted.

What's wrong with patriotism?

Since it is not the same as nationalism what is the JW's problem with it? The Israelites loved their country and weren't condemned by God for it.

Patriotism - the love of one's country

Nationalism - advocacy of the utmost political advancement of one's nation or people The JW's are, according to the definition of nationalism very nationalistic because they advocate the utmost political (pertinent to governmental affairs) advancement of their worldwide organisation of people. They even declare in God's name that the WTBTS will be instrumental in governing the earth after Armageddon.

A lot of depressing stories of how the unnatural jw environment left a lot of youths in a state of emotional and sexual confusion, I remember the pressure to pioneer because the end is ever so near, yet now many of the teenagers of the 1970's have teenage children themselves in the same old world and the end has been indefinitely postponed.
