I agree that the man made justice system is a joke and that trying to justify things such as the death penalty is very contaversial . Jesus forbade the using of force at anytime so alot of the "christians " around here like to look at the old testament so they can sleep at night when God authorized the jews to met out justice . An eye for an eye has already been mentioned on this thread . As far as I'm concerned they are doing society a favor by getting rid of these psychos and not making them a burden on honest hard working people which I think is also a crime . Anyway murder and violent crimes are the only reasons I can see putting somebody in prison over but I think the justice system abuses it's power by imprisoning non violent types over very petty issues . I can think of one case the death penalty should have been used here in texas is when the texas seven broke out of maximum security and killed some cops and robbed a target store stealing some guns . As I've been saying they are very dangerous to keep around . Once you deprive someone of their freedom they become like caged animals . I would think that cave man knew if he couldn't rest easy in his own village or cave then something had to be done to preserve some sense of security . LOL Ughhhhh BTW . I don't believe in evolution .

There are also plenty of cases where people are convicted on circumstantial evidence and there is no "smoking gun". In those cases, a life sentance would be better.

I don't understand how you can think it's OK to imprison someone for life when they may not be guilty. The type of punishment shouldn't depend on the level of certainty. If a person is guilty, they should be punished. If they are innocent, they should not. If we are not sure, then we must treat them as innocent, not lock them up for life.
You're right, it is a condundrum. If you are convinced enough that someone is guilty then it shouldn't matter whether they get life or death. But too many jurys convict someone based on the cirrcumstantial evidence but yet have some doubt. If there is reasonable doubt they are supposed to acquit but if the doubt is ever so slight they'll still convict but recommend a life sentance. It's not a perfect system, never will be. Like I've said before I don't have the answer, but if the there is 100% proof of someone being guilty I would support the death penalty for them.
Here's a interesting case...
okay that didn't work but here's the link (I hope): http://journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ%2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031783919945&path=!nationworld&s=1037645509161
What's the point in keeping this guy alive? He admitted it and he's unrepentant. Of what use is he to society? Why is he worth keeping alive? He plea bargained to avoid the death penalty. He's got it made now. He had been living in the mountains like a hermit for five years...now he's going to be fed and cared for for the rest of his life. That's not justice. -

And I thought our "Constitution" forbade that...
funny how things are in "real" life.

I wouldn't go so far at to say the I'm a proponent of the death penalty, but I cerrtainly have a problem with locking away repeat offenders of violent crimes for the rest of their lives. Proplog2, feels that "paying to keep a killer in jail is a very small price to pay for maintaining your own human dignity." Well if thats the case, I'll send you a waiver to sign authorizing Uncle Sam to collect my share of that burden from your taxes because Im not real excited about the thought financially supporting these people by clothing, feeding, and housing them.
Besides, Im not sure that the price is as small as you think it is. Im not claiming that I know how much is costs to keep an inmate locked up per year but I do know that it's not cheap.

When "innocent people" are not being killed, I'm all for the death penalty.
Minimus, You can't possibly be for the death penalty. You've come out of some weird religion that promulgates death as the only alternative to being a believer. Death is not a punishment, it's not a lesson in life that enriches the recipient so that he becomes better informed. It's certainly not a process of rehabilitation. It is simply a retribution. Aren't you just sick of retribution? Englishman.

So, since that's not the case, you're theoretically in favor of it? -

So, as long as these murderers don't get "free" room and board, you folks can live with all the negatives of the death penalty?
-The fact that innocent people have been executed.
-The fact that minorities are much more likely to receive it?
-The fact that the poorer you are, the more likely you are to receive it?
You can't pick and choose which aspects of capitol punishment you like, and leave all the others out. It's all or nothing.
Besides, Im not sure that the price is as small as you think it is. Im not claiming that I know how much is costs to keep an inmate locked up per year but I do know that it's not cheap.
Once again, executions are much more expensive than life in prison:
"Florida spent an estimated $57 million on the death penalty from 1973 to 1988 to achieve 18 executions - that is an average of $3.2 million per execution."
(Miami Herald, July 10, 1988)."Florida calculated that each execution there costs some $3.18 million. If incarceration is estimated to cost $17000/year, a comparable statistic for life in prison of 40 years would be $680,000."

:"If incarceration is estimated to cost $17000/year..."
I think this is likely a gross underestimation. Why, I've calculated it cost me over 20k per year just to keep a love slave captive in my own basement (paid for), and that's with me doing all the work!
