are these devices completely invisible to outside requests?

Yes, unless you intentionally expose a specific port number that is forwarded to an internal IP address. As an example, you can expose port 80 on one box that is a web server and expose port 21 and 22 on a box that will be an FTP server.

I'm sure you can expose the NAS device through the proper port number, however it will be an all-or-nothing deal. You will not be able to block certain drives or folders. If you are comfortable with the idea of exposing this device with normal NT authentication, I say go for it.

Something else that can be fun and interesting to do is turn on the windows FTP server and then give the anonymous account full read and write permissions in the FTP directory. It doesn't take very long before people (mostly hackers and crackers) start storing their warez, movies and porn on your FTP site. It is very interesting to see what all they upload.

Is it even remotely possible for someone outside of my network to connect to - or even see - this device?

There is no such thing as an unhackable system. You have to weigh the likelihood of a hack attempt vs. how much you're willing to spend to quell your paranoia.

    Otherwise, what donkey said.

    Good luck!
