What fsacinating stuff!
changing the subject slightly,i can remember as a Kid the last surviving British vet of the Boer War passing away.
Also,in line with another poster,im always shocked when i see WW1 vets still going..the last surviving British Cavalry man died recently..i think he fought at Mons in 1914.
This is also changing the subject a bit. The United States never had a Civil War. We did however have the War of Northern Agression and there wasn't anything civil about it.

I bet your glad your in Dixie
I'll bet you're glad you weren't in Dixie during Sherman's March Through Georgia! By the way, just as a wierd aside: I read to my kids every night before bed, and right now I'm reading "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" to Jackson, age 9, and "Gone With The Wind" to Jennie, age 11. I can't tell you how mind-boggling it is to change gears like that every night.

Cruzenheart, I was 12 years old when I first started reading GWTW.......while I found parts of it difficult to follow, I (naturally) developed a huge crush on Rhett Butler right from the start and I'll never forget the first time I saw the movie, with him standing at the bottom of the stairs at Twelve Oaks, staring up at Scarlett (sigh!). When I was 15 my parents bought me the book in two volumes that were leatherbound. I've still got them to this day.
On another note, I remember seeing a movie several years ago called The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman. It was supposed to be the story of a black woman who had been a former slave in the Old South and who lived until Civil Rights started in the 1960s. The end of the movie said that she died "at the age of 110". I had always assumed that this was a true story, but I've heard other reports that no it wasn't---it was just a Hollywood movie......anyone know for sure?

Which side fired the first shot? You're not going to get me to defend either side as right or wrong. There was plenty of both on each side.
I don't know why I was looking through this old thread, but my mom was a nurse in the 40's and she knew a couple of Civil War Veterans.
