disfellowshipped for gluttony?

Being fat does not indicate gluttony. Many overweight people don't eat much more than a thinner person. The factor is exercise

Being skinny does not mean that a person is not a glutton. Their body may burn it off. But they are taking more than their fair share of food perhaps at meal time or when a guest a someone's house.

I have never heard of anyone being DF'd for gluttony. But then for that matter, I have known very few JWs that were DF'd for drunkenness.

Knowing whether a person is a glutton or has a medical condition, would mean the elders would have to pry into very personal matters. Since many elders I know are people of size, it might be a hypocritical exercsie. Then there are conditions like bulimia and aneroxia-bulimia.

Should JWs be DF'd because they don't take care of their diabetic condition properly?

    Blondie,

Don't they "pry into very personal matters" anyway?

That's true, usually sexual ones, because they get a kick out of it. I don't see them getting a sexual thrill from demanding private medical information from your doctor to prove you have a medical condition. They would also be treading on legal issues.

Being fat does not automatically make one a glutton any more than being thinner means you are not a glutton.

Bulimia is a real medical condition that is life-threatening and is not a moral sin. Most bulimics are normal size.

A person can be an alcoholic and not even drink but when they do drink is beyond healthy limits.

Like I said, it would be very, very hard for elders to assemble the necessary "proof" to DF someone for "gluttony." I think that is why so few are DF'd for drunkennesss/alcoholism.

I have heard of people being DF'd after several tickets for DWI or after a serious accident. Then they let the secular government determine they were drunk. I still know of elders that have been known drunkards for 30 years and never DF'd.

I dunno, Blondie. I'm having a bit of a different take on it, but hey, there's the occasional time we see things differently, huh? ;)

They DF folks because of circumstances, we've read the stories here... you slept in the house alone? Well, then, you were fornicating! I don't care if your car broke down, you should have walked the 50 miles in a blizzard, rather than give reproach to jah's org. You know the script.

I think it comes down to the fact that there are so many drunks in the elder arrangement. I know one guy (who was a favorite of mine, I must admit!) who was always liquored, an elder from a young age, and is now experiencing middle-age dementia due to his alcoholism .... nothing ever said about it, and everyone knows. Actually, there was a trio of them, one elder and two MS, who were friends. Drunk all weekend.

As far as gluttony, well everyone in the congo knows who the gluttons are, be they fat or thin. Same goes for bulimia,,, isn't that as detrimental to the body as smoking? See where I'm going with this?

And as you say, well, getting the scoop on sexual matters is a whole other thing. The salacious details and all!! And it's easy to 'get' someone on sex, most folks have a slip in their younger years, and if they want to nail you, it's the best way. Sex still pushes the self-righteous button, even for lots of 'normal' folk.

    It's all self-serving poppycock.

I have personally never heard of anyone being disfellowshipped for gluttony. How could they, really??

Years ago I had a conversation about this very thing with an older sister. She said that it has its roots in the Roman empire. Apparently, they would sometimes induce vomiting so they could eat and eat at the big banquets they would have!!

After many a special assembly, we would meet up at a local Country Buffet. We would bring our extra size eatin clothes. We should've been summairilly shot. There was no stopping us. Not only us, but a whole bunch from the assembly as well. We couldn't wait to get home to the dental floss

There is this prominent brother up in New England, with his whole family, that it's of public knowledge that they're all gluttons. There are even stories of how they've been asked to leave from certain eating places because they've abused the buffet lines.

They show it physically too! I'm talking about grossly and morbidly obese, huge as a house, every single one of them!!!

We would think that for their public display of gluttony they would've gotten at the very least privately reproof. NOPE! Instead the head of the family heads some department in the assemblies and all the others are elders and regular pioneers. All are loved and regarded very highly within the Hispanic JW community up in the Massachusetts area.

    Talk about a double standard!!!

I knew a person who ate like crazy and was huge. An elder friend of mine told me in confidence that he and some other elders were planning a judicial visit with her about the gluttony.

It was encouraging to hear the concern for her spiritual well being.

It is not a disfellowshipping offence, it is not listed in Gal 5 as a "work of the flesh".. one may lose a "Privilge" or position because of it though..

Come to that Gal 5 19 also mentions envies, fits of anger (as distinct from violence) jealousy etc. I never heard of anyone being d/fd for those either
