I had always thought of it as this... Does this make sense?
Millions of years ago the sun was stronger. This would project it's light and heat a greater distance. Mars would be warmed and the earth would be more like Mercury.
As the sun grew in age, it lost energy, and it's heat retreated a bit. Leaving Mars frozen and earth a perfect temp. One day, the Earth will freeze and Mercury will be the perfect temp before the sun finally engulfs all it's satelites.
What do you think... Plausible?
