Not all Canadians get a long weekend right now, just the special ones! We get it in Ontario, but I don't think they have it in Quebec.
I'm not sure about Nova Scotia.

Quebec gets June 24 (St-Jean-Baptiste Day) as their official Civic Holiday. They get two holidays a week apart, which is great if you're taking vacation at that time.
Everywhere else in Canada observes a Civic Holiday (as opposed to a Statutory Holiday) on the first Monday in August.
Of course, some people (like medical folks) end up working anyway. :: sigh ::
