Are cellular (mobile) phones safe or not?

For a while now some scientists have been claiming that cellular phones emmit radiation that interferes with the brain and the immune system. Do you take such warnings seriously or do you think they are just alarmist and without any real basis.

food is unsafe is one eats too much of it. Water is unsafe. Cars are unsafe. I am sure with cellular phones if they are overused there may be an increased risk. All about commonsense really

Good call stilla (no pun intended of course )

That said, I get real bad earache if I'm on my mobile for longer than about 3 mins. Not sure if I'm 'radiation sensitive' though - I even get toothache when I walk under electricity pylons!

There must be some truth in the warnings, we know that they interfere with electrical equipment so if the brain and nervous system is working on electrical signals, it's likely to interfere with these too. Putting that in the context of brain tumours, perhaps the close range sends the brain cells into overdrive which, as far as I know is what causes cancers.

Yes! They are especially dangerous when you are talking on the cell while driving!

    Idiot drivers!

Talesin once I nearly got run over by a driver talking on his mobile as he was turning into a side street. Some countries have laws against talking on a mobile phone while driving.

However some scientists say they won't use a mobile more than 10-15 minutes per month or at all due to the radiation danger. It's strange since they became such a part of modern life and hundreds of milions of people use them.

I remember hearing about cell phone radiation as early as 98 or 99. Back then word had it that Nokia emitted the most radiation and therefore was the most dangerous. I haven't heard anything about it in the media for some time now, but I just now tried a Google search and got 593,000 results... The number 2.5 seems to be the standard answer on most of these websites, meaning a cell phone user is supposedly 2.5 times more likely to get a brain tumor than one who doesn't use a cell phone. Whether this is definitive or not, I couldn't really say. *shrugs* I also remember hearing as early as the 80's that saccharine caused cancer, but I have been using it (the ingredient in Sweet-n-Low) in my coffee and iced tea for years.

Time will prove whether these reports are like those of the 1960's claiming cigarettes are dangerous at a time when this was generally thought to be just alarmist.

I hardly use mine...I just like having it for emergencies or when I'm driving to meet up with people. Comes in real handy when you're trying to figure out where everybody is. LOL I do use a headset when driving...can't stand balancing a phone in one hand and trying to steer with the other. Even with the headset, my convos are usually less than a minute long, so I think I'm relatively safe from radiation.

cel phones and other wireless devices (cordless phones, WI-FI etc) operate (radiate) at or near the same frequency band in which your microwave oven does.... (2.4Ghz), but at a lower power level.

Just because the power level is lower "they" claim there is no danger.
